To start, I’m 38 and admittedly overweight (not excessively, but I could stand to lose some weight). For about the last five years, my eGFR hasn’t gone above 90.
I’ve been somewhat anxious about this, even though my doctors haven’t really reacted. I had abdominal CT scans due to gastritis that revealed two “simple cysts” on my kidneys, but the urologist mentioned those are quite frequent. I’ve also had three kidney stones in the past, but nothing else significant was found.
Here is the history of my eGFR levels over the last five years:
- Latest (03/2024) - 77 (Creatinine 1.23, trace protein on urine dipstick)
- 07/2023 - 72 (The lowest recorded, but I was extremely ill with a respiratory virus for about six weeks), creatinine was 1.3
- 05/2023 - 81.5, creatinine 1.18
- 04/2023 - 85.9, creatinine 1.13
- 12/2022 - 73.9, creatinine 1.28
- 01/2021 - 95.9, creatinine 1.07
The numbers seem to bounce around. My urine dipsticks are generally normal, though I sometimes have trace protein. One time in 2022, I had trace protein, ketones, and Leuk Esterase, but I’m not sure what that implies.
Aside from that, my CBC and metabolic panels are always perfect, which is confusing.
It feels like there’s a downward trend, yet the results are inconsistent. I likely don’t hydrate enough, and I’ve heard that a higher BMI can result in a lower eGFR, though I’m not sure if that’s accurate. My lipids are currently high as well.
I’m not asking for a diagnosis of kidney disease, but rather if these specific levels look concerning to anyone? For context, my BMI is exactly 30.
