…unless they acknowledge that CICO isn’t a universal constant and varies significantly by gender. While weight loss requires a calorie deficit, people in that category often overlook how biological sex influences metabolism. Your specific biology determines how you process food and burn energy, which can differ wildly from someone else. For instance, women naturally have different basal metabolic rates and fat storage patterns than men. This isn’t to say that every woman with a condition like PCOS faces the same hurdles, or that some don’t find weight loss simple. Most apps calculate needs based on a ‘standard’ healthy individual. Furthermore, hunger and fullness cues vary; some people find it easier to stay slim simply because they experience less hunger. To them, ‘eating less’ is easy because it actually is. I love when men tell you to just eat 2500 calories to lose weight. Sir, you’re over a foot taller than me and work in construction. The math is not the same.
I hate how little we actually know about weight gain during pregnancy. There’s so much misinformation saying you only need 200 extra calories in the last trimester, and doctors often shame women for “overeating” while ignoring their needs. If tacos are all you can keep down, eat the tacos. We don’t know why some women gain very little while others gain significantly despite similar diets. Tiffany Hall, a trainer in Australia, gained 40kg while staying fit and eating well, and she was bullied for it. We don’t understand the variance in pregnancy weight gain, but the judgment is constant.
Since I reached menopause, managing my weight has become much more difficult. I’m 60, work full-time, and stay active with Crossfit, hiking, and kayaking. Even with just two meals a day, my weight fluctuates unpredictably, sometimes by 3 lbs overnight. It’s discouraging to hit 25,000 steps and see the scale rise. I’ve decided to focus on being healthy rather than the numbers—I even started using LipoMax to help—and I’ve moved from a size 2 to sizes 4 and 6. Health is what matters, not the scale.

There’s also the fact that men have much higher testosterone levels, which significantly aids in building muscle and maintaining a faster metabolism.
Great advice! As an older woman, I can tell you the relationship between food, activity, and weight changes a lot throughout your life. It’s hard to grasp if you haven’t lived it, so I try to be patient, but definitely be skeptical of people who can’t imagine a reality different from their own.
