Advice needed for chronic fungal infections

Since my military service over three decades ago, I have dealt with persistent toenail fungus and recurring athlete’s foot. Recently, topical treatments have stopped working, even after trying different types, and I’m now seeing more ringworm and jock itch, which has even spread to my hands. Back in 2018, I took oral Lamisil for six weeks; it improved the toenails but didn’t clear them completely. Everything I’ve read indicates that toenails require at least 12 weeks of treatment, but my VA podiatrist won’t prescribe it again due to potential side effects. I’m feeling desperate because this is taking a toll on my physical health, mental state, and social life. I’m also considering asking for a higher disability rating, but the rules mention needing six weeks of oral medication within the past year. I’m confused if that means the last 12 months or a calendar year. Also, does it count if the medication failed to fix the problem? 1. How should I handle VA Podiatry? 2. Can anyone explain the systemic medication requirement?

The six-week oral medication requirement is accurate. I wouldn’t stress about the “past 365 days” part too much, as getting a prescription today and taking it for six weeks would likely satisfy that timeframe. I have a 30% rating for skin issues. I’ve been given terbinafine for athlete’s foot that persists despite treatment, only improving while I’m actually on the pills. When my VA physician denied a refill and only offered cream, I used Plushcare to consult a doctor who provided the terbinafine prescription I needed.

I’m a bit late to the thread, but I just received a prescription for this. My VA physician informed me that treatment takes six months to allow the new nail to grow in. I was given a 90-day supply, and I’ll need a liver function test before getting the remaining 90 days. He emphasized that a full six months is necessary for the treatment to work.
