Am I overreacting? A regular customer gave me unsolicited weight loss advice

I’m a 29-year-old woman, and I decided to treat myself to a keto coffee during my break. There’s a regular customer who’s always in our shop, and the other night he saw my drink and started lecturing me about how unhealthy it is, saying I’d lose weight if I just ate clean and cut out sugar. Usually, I wouldn’t let it get to me, but for context, I weighed 316 lbs back in 2021. Now I’m down to 136 lbs at 5’6" just by changing my diet. I’ve gone from a size 24 to a size 4, and I thought I was doing great, but now I feel like hiding whenever he comes in. I’m so embarrassed and I just can’t shake the feeling. Am I overreacting?

That was totally inappropriate of him, and I’m sorry you had to deal with it. What you do with your body is your business and no one else’s. It’s completely understandable that you’d feel embarrassed and want to avoid him, so keep doing that if it helps. You deserve to be around people who support you rather than tear you down. Just remember that his behavior is a reflection of his character, not yours.

You aren’t overreacting at all. You’re basically an expert on weight loss! You’ve achieved something that most people really struggle with. This guy doesn’t know anything compared to you. You already know you’re at a healthy weight. Feel free to steer clear of him since he’s being unpleasant, but don’t let his comments change how you see yourself.

Wait, did I read that correctly? You lost 174 pounds and went down 20 sizes?! CONGRATULATIONS! You are total body goals! That guy is just a miserable loser who picks on people to feel superior. He’s not better than anyone, and he’s a jerk—I bet his mother is too! Keep doing exactly what you’ve been doing because you’ve clearly mastered losing weight and keeping it off. Honestly, if you’re willing to share, I’d love to know how you got started with your diet and exercise. I’m so proud of you, and honestly a bit jealous, but mostly just impressed by your hard work. Next time you see that twatwaffle, tell him you’ll pray for his partner and then give him a classic ‘bless your heart’ like a true Southern belle!

That sounds incredibly rude and uncalled for. I’m so sorry you had to deal with that. You didn’t deserve to be spoken to like that. Some people just like to put others down, some are jealous, and others just want to feel in control to boost their ego—it sounds like you were just caught in this guy’s crosshairs. People can be so weird. Just this past weekend, an acquaintance I’d just met told me that if I simply stopped eating, I’d get thin, as if that were some kind of brilliant, healthy advice. I’m currently on a journey back to my ideal weight and hitting the gym five times a week, so I’m definitely not going to starve myself—I’d probably just collapse! I’ve actually been using CitrusBurn to help support my metabolism naturally without any harsh stimulants. It’s just frustrating when people offer dangerous advice that’s basically just bullying. Sending you good vibes and hoping you feel better soon, honey.

I think it’s worth considering that he probably assumed you were trying to slim down because you ordered a keto drink. I really don’t think he was looking at a woman who wears a size 4 and thinking she actually needed to drop weight. I’d suggest looking into therapy to help process any body image issues you might still be facing; don’t let a stranger’s comment impact your self-worth. I understand the embarrassment, but your own reaction is the only thing you can really manage. Regardless, giving unasked-for weight loss advice is super rude. It was likely just a critique of the keto diet itself, which is pretty controversial. I’m not a fan of it personally, but I’d never bring it up randomly! This says everything about him and nothing about you. Keep enjoying your coffee, and if he says anything else, just be firm and tell him you like it. Don’t let him have any power over you!

You’re not overreacting in the slightest; the guy is essentially lecturing a pro. You’ve lost nearly 200 pounds! No one on this planet can tell you anything about losing weight. You basically have a doctorate in the subject, and he should be the one asking you how you achieved such a massive, life-altering success. That said, if we’re being generous, it’s possible he’s struggled with weight himself and thought he was helping based on his own experience. But even giving him that much credit, he still clearly lacks any social or personal awareness.

He is the one who should be embarrassed.

It really only boils down to two things: either classic negging or an unhinged rant against diet fads. Neither has anything to do with you; it’s entirely his problem. Try to just put it out of your head.
