Based on my research, I’ve only seen info on the instant effects of skin hydration, like how it adds volume and softens fine lines. However, are there any permanent perks? Can consistent HA application actually stop new wrinkles from developing? I’ve come across claims that well-hydrated skin is less prone to wrinkling, but I haven’t seen any scientific proof. Essentially, I’m trying to figure out if applying HA every day is necessary—even on days I’m staying in and don’t care about my appearance—or if I should just keep it for occasions when I want that extra plumpness.
Aside from supporting skin barrier repair through hydration, there aren’t really any lasting effects. Hyaluronic acid doesn’t penetrate deeply enough to alter cellular biology for permanent change. It primarily remains on the surface, binding to moisture to give those fleeting results.
Think of your skin as your body and HA as an electrolyte drink. It provides a quick hydration boost—though you still need regular water—and it’s quite effective. However, if you work out tomorrow, you’ll be thirsty once more. Even if you drink it daily for weeks, you’ll still feel the thirst on the day you skip it. Does that mean it isn’t useful? Not at all. While ‘short-term’ is a fair description, it shouldn’t imply the product is pointless. Certain things, like keeping skin hydrated, simply need consistent daily care.
I came across a really helpful and educational video you might want to check out: https://youtu.be/GlMv4_7yi18
I’ve heard that HA works wonders for wound care and can minimize excessive scarring, though that’s still considered a temporary advantage.
Claiming there are zero long-term effects is incorrect. While it’s true that its primary function is keeping skin moisturized and full, maintaining that state over time can cause lines formed by dehydration to fade slightly. It’s similar to Botox; the first time you get it, the effects wear off fast, but after years of use, the wrinkles take longer to reappear because the skin has adapted to its smoother state. HA isn’t as powerful as Botox, of course, but the logic is comparable.
It seems like HA is in almost everything now; it’s getting difficult to find products without it!
Only if you notice your skin feels parched without it. As long as your skin barrier is healthy, you should be okay.
