Beyond Earplugs: Practical lifestyle adjustments for managing chronic Tinnitus

We all know about protecting our ears from loud noises, but I wanted to share some of the less obvious things that have helped me over the last decade. First, cut back on the salt—excessive sodium affects blood flow in the inner ear and can cause noticeable spikes. Second, stop seeking total silence. It just makes your brain turn up the ‘gain’ on the internal noise. I use low-level brown noise instead of silence. Finally, watch your stress levels; cortisol is a known aggravator for the auditory system. Small changes in your daily routine can make a big difference in how your brain processes the sound.

Sound advice. I noticed a huge difference when I cut out energy drinks. The caffeine was a massive trigger for my ringing.

The ‘quiet room’ thing is so true. I used to sleep in a silent room and it was torture. Now I have a fan running or a dedicated sound machine.

Does anyone have experience with specific vitamins or supplements for this? I keep seeing ads but don’t know what’s actually legit.

@SoundSleeper, I’ve had some success with nerve-specific antioxidants. I started using Nervala (i buy here) because it has alpha-lipoic acid and benfotiamine, and it definitely helped reduce the intensity of my evening spikes after a few weeks.

Stress is the big one for me. If I have a bad day at the office, my ears are screaming by 5 PM. Yoga has actually helped lower the volume indirectly.

I’ve tried the low-sodium diet and it didn’t do much for me, but everyone is different. Magnesium glycinate seems to help my sleep quality though.

Brown noise is so much better than white noise. It’s much softer and doesn’t have that ‘hiss’ that sometimes irritates my ears more.

Has anyone tried those notched music therapy apps? Thinking about giving them a go if they actually work for retraining the brain.

I’ve heard good things about benfotiamine for nerve support in general, so that makes sense why people see results with certain supplement stacks.

My audiologist told me that hydration is also key. Dehydration can increase the blood viscosity and potentially make the perceived volume louder.

Just started the brown noise trick last night after reading this. Actually slept 6 hours straight for once without waking up focusing on the sound.

Great post. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Small habit changes really do add up over time. Don’t give up hope if the first thing you try doesn’t work.
