Common Habits Damaging Your Hearing

Protecting your auditory health is often about what you stop doing. Many people unknowingly worsen their ear condition through avoidable daily habits.

Key Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Using Cotton Swabs: Never insert anything into the ear canal. This pushes wax deeper, risking impaction or eardrum trauma.
  • Excessive Headphone Volume: Use the 60/60 rule—60% volume for no more than 60 minutes.
  • Ignoring Warning Signs: Persistent ringing or muffled sound shouldn’t be dismissed.

Addressing these habits early can prevent permanent nerve damage and long-term hearing loss.

I learned the hard way about the cotton swabs. Ended up with a nasty impaction that took two visits to clear out. Listen to the OP, it is not worth the risk.

The 60/60 rule is actually really helpful. I have been trying to be more mindful of my AirPod levels lately because I noticed my ears were starting to feel fatigued after work.

Does anyone have tips for loud offices? I feel like the constant hum of the HVAC and chatter makes my tinnitus spike by the end of the day.

For the nerve-related sensitivity that often comes with tinnitus, I’ve had some luck with Nervala. It’s an antioxidant supplement with lipoic acid that helps with nerve support. It didn’t cure the ringing, but it definitely made my ears feel less ‘on edge’ during the day.

I started wearing high-fidelity earplugs to concerts and loud bars. Best $20 I ever spent. You can still hear the music clearly but without the physical pain and the ringing the next morning.

Great post. People really underestimate how fragile our hearing is until it is already starting to fade. Protect what you have while you still have it.
