Hi everyone. I’m a 29-year-old female from the UK. I went on a trip to Greece with three friends back in July. Immediately upon returning, I came down with bloody diarrhea and pain so excruciating it was unbearable for three days. I couldn’t even stand up or talk because it hurt so much, and I was rushing to the bathroom more than 45 times a day. I couldn’t keep any food down, and even drinking water or moving slightly caused immediate pain and urgency. I eventually got to the hospital for IV fluids because I was extremely dehydrated and weak. I recovered after a week, but then found out my sample tested positive for Shiga toxin-producing E. Coli O157. Reading up on how dangerous it is really scared me. The UK Health Security Agency contacted me to trace the source, but the timeline suggests I definitely got it in Greece. None of my friends got sick; we shared almost everything except for a salmon salad I had at a beach club. Has anyone else gone through this, or can any doctors provide some information? I’ve had my share of illnesses, but this was truly traumatizing and I felt like I was at death’s door.
