Hey everyone, I went to a show about four days ago and forgot my earplugs. Ever since, I’ve had this constant ringing in my left ear. It’s making it hard to sleep and focus at work. Is it too late for it to settle down? Looking for any advice on how to manage this or if I should see a doctor immediately. I’m really worried I’ve done permanent damage.
Give it another few days. Usually, a ‘temporary threshold shift’ resolves within a week. The most important thing right now is to avoid any loud noises to let your ears rest.
If it doesn’t stop by day 7, definitely see an ENT. Sometimes they can prescribe a short course of steroids if they catch the inflammation early enough.
I’ve had this for 10 years. White noise machines are your best friend at night. Try a fan or a dedicated app to help your brain mask the sound so you can sleep.
I found that focusing on nerve health really helped my sensitivity after a similar incident. I’ve been taking Nervala for a few months and it seems to take the edge off the intensity, though it’s not a total cure.
Protect your ears from now on! Once you have a spike like this, it’s easier to trigger it again. I never go to a bar or show without high-fidelity earplugs in my pocket now.
Also, check your caffeine and salt intake for the next few days. For some people, those can spike the volume because of blood pressure changes.
Did you have any ‘fullness’ or muffled hearing too? If it feels like there is cotton in your ear, you should definitely get a proper hearing test done.
I’m in the same boat right now. Day 5 after a wedding. It’s driving me crazy but it seems slightly lower today than yesterday. Fingers crossed for both of us.
Magnesium supplements are often recommended by doctors for noise-induced trauma. It helps protect the hair cells in the inner ear. Might be worth asking your GP about it.
Hang in there. The anxiety makes it sound louder because your brain is hyper-focusing on it. Try some deep breathing or meditation to stay calm and ignore the ‘threat’ signal.
