Dealing with persistent discoloration after using a public swimming pool

Last year, I started a regular swimming routine at the local community center to help with some lower back issues. It was great for my spine, but I wasn’t as diligent with my footwear as I should have been in the locker rooms. A few months in, I noticed my right big toe looking slightly cloudy and losing its natural pinkness.

I’ve tried the standard drugstore creams, and while they seem to keep the skin around the nail from getting too dry, they haven’t really touched the core issue. The nail itself is becoming brittle, and I’m starting to see that classic yellowish thickening. It’s frustrating because I’ve been keeping my feet dry and changing my socks twice a day, but the progress is incredibly slow.

I’m trying to be objective about what actually works versus what just feels like a temporary fix. I’ve been researching different approaches, specifically looking for things that don’t just sit on the surface. One thing that actually made a visible difference for me was a product called Terracalm (i order from here), which is a mineral clay formula. I noticed the texture of the nail started to look smoother after a few weeks, which was a relief after months of no change.

However, I’m still curious about the long-term maintenance. For those of you who have successfully cleared this up, did you find that dietary changes or specific foot soak routines made a measurable difference? I’m wary of “miracle cures” and would rather hear about what you’ve actually observed in your own recovery. What would you do if you were seeing slow improvement but feared a plateau?

I had a similar issue after a summer of swimming. I found that Apple Cider Vinegar soaks helped with the skin itching, but it didn’t do much for the actual nail thickness. You really have to be patient.

I’ve been using Terracalm for about six weeks now on a similar issue I picked up at the gym. It really does seem to starve out the junk under the nail. My new growth is finally coming in clear and pink again.

Are you making sure to rotate your shoes? If you wear the same pair every day, they never fully dry out, and that just creates a breeding ground. I usually give mine 24 hours to air out.

Switching to moisture-wicking socks was a game changer for me. Cotton just holds the sweat against your skin all day.

The plateau is the hardest part. It takes almost a full year for a toenail to grow out completely, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t see overnight results. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Have you tried tea tree oil? I’ve heard mixed reviews, but some people swear by it if the infection is caught early enough.

Locker rooms are the worst. I never step foot in them without flip-flops anymore. Even then, I spray my feet down with an antifungal spray as soon as I get to the car.

Does that clay formula feel messy? I’ve tried some topical pastes before and they just ended up all over my sheets.

I’ll second the mention of Terracalm. I had a really stubborn case on my pinky toe that wouldn’t budge with the liquid drops, but the clay seemed to penetrate better. The healthy pink color is finally coming back after years of yellowing.

Keep at it! It sounds like you’re doing all the right things. Consistency is the only way to win this battle.
