Does a silk pillowcase actually help with sleep creases?

I turned 46 last year and started noticing that the “sleep lines” on my left cheek weren’t disappearing by lunchtime anymore. For years, I just ignored them, but lately, they seemed to be turning into permanent wrinkles because of how I smash my face into the pillow.

Before trying this, I went through a whole phase of trying to fix it with products. I bought those expensive overnight “slugging” masks and even tried taping my face with medical tape, which was a total disaster and irritated my skin. I also tried those contoured anti-wrinkle pillows that are shaped like butterflies. They were so firm and uncomfortable that I couldn’t actually fall asleep, which just made my skin look worse from exhaustion.

About three months ago, I finally splurged on a 22-momme silk pillowcase. Honestly, I thought it was just a luxury gimmick for influencers, but the actual physical sensation is very different from cotton or even high-thread-count sateen.

Pros:

  • I haven’t woken up with a single “crinkle” mark on my face since I switched.
  • My hair isn’t a bird’s nest in the morning, which was a nice unexpected bonus.
  • It stays much cooler than cotton, which helps with night flashes.

Cons:

  • It is high maintenance. You really have to hand wash it or use a delicate bag, or the silk gets scratchy and loses its shine.
  • It’s slippery. My pillow sometimes slides right off the bed if I move too much.
  • The initial cost is high for what feels like just a piece of fabric.

Who this helps:
If you are a side sleeper over 40 and you’re tired of waking up with “pillow face,” it’s a solid investment. It won’t erase deep wrinkles you already have, but it definitely stops that daily friction that makes things look worse.

I’ve been on the fence about this for a year. Is there a specific brand you recommend? I see so many cheap ones online that I suspect are actually polyester.

Just make sure it says 100% Mulberry silk. If it says ‘satin’ it’s usually just polyester and won’t breathe the same way. I learned that the hard way!

I tried one but I couldn’t stand the feeling of my night cream sliding around on it. Do you find that your face products just rub off on the silk?

The hair benefit is the real winner for me. I have fine hair that used to break constantly at the crown. Since switching to silk, I have way less shedding on my pillow.

How often are you washing yours? I heard you have to wash them every few days because they absorb oils, but I’m worried about wearing the fabric out.

I’ve used one for five years now. I’m 52. I can definitely tell a difference when I travel and have to use the hotel’s cotton cases. I wake up looking ten years older after one night on cotton.

For the washing issue—I use a pH-neutral silk wash and air dry it indoors away from the sun. It stays soft that way. Never put it in the dryer!

The sliding off the bed thing is real though lol. I had to get a different headboard because my pillow kept disappearing into the gap behind the mattress.

I’m 41 and just started seeing those vertical lines by my ears. This post might have finally convinced me to pull the trigger on a real silk one.

Great honest review. It’s refreshing to hear about something that isn’t just another $100 serum that doesn’t work.
