Does checking the scale every morning help?

I’ve been experimenting with my morning routine lately to see if it impacts my consistency. For the past month, I’ve shifted from weekly check-ins to weighing myself every single morning.

Firstly, for tracking, it helps me see how certain foods from the night before cause water retention. Secondly, for habits, it serves as a daily reminder of my goals before I even reach for breakfast. Finally, it removes the ‘fear’ of the scale by making it just another data point.

Does checking the scale every morning help you stay on track?

I started doing this in January. It really helps me not freak out when the scale goes up 2 lbs after a salty meal because I know it’s just water.

I had to stop. I’m 52 and if the number didn’t move, it ruined my whole mood for the day. Once a week is plenty for my mental health.

If you do this, I highly recommend using a moving average. There are apps that smooth out the line so you see the trend rather than the daily spikes.

At 47, my weight fluctuates so much with my cycle (or whatever is left of it). Daily weighing actually taught me that those ‘gains’ aren’t real fat.

Weekly for me. Sunday mornings only.

The science of it is interesting, but most people can’t handle the daily fluctuations. You have to be very detached from the number.

I’ve been at this for years. I find that when I stop weighing daily, I start ‘estimating’ my portions a bit too loosely. The scale keeps me honest about my habits without having to track every single calorie in a log.

I only hop on when I feel like I’ve had a ‘good’ day. Probably not the best strategy!

Make sure you do it same time, same way. After the bathroom, before water or clothes. Consistency is the only way the data is useful.

Totally agree! It’s just data. No different than checking the weather.

I prefer how my jeans fit as a metric. The scale can be a liar, especially if you are hitting the gym and gaining muscle.
