I used to wake up every morning with a dull ache in my hips that made those first few steps to the kitchen a real chore. I finally started experimenting with my sleep posture.
Placing a firm pillow between my knees has been a game-changer for my side-sleeping. It keeps my pelvis neutral and prevents that twisting motion that pulls on the lower back.
I also found that a thinner pillow under my neck helps keep my spine aligned. It takes a few nights to get used to the extra bulk in bed, but the relief is worth it.

It definitely helps! I’ve been doing this for years. If I forget to use the pillow even for one night, I can feel the difference in my lower back the next day. It really is about keeping that alignment.

What kind of pillow do you use? I tried a regular bed pillow but it was way too bulky and kept sliding out from under the covers.

I actually bought one of those hourglass-shaped memory foam pillows specifically for knees. It has a strap that keeps it attached to your leg so it doesn’t disappear in the middle of the night.

I’ve actually combined this pillow trick with a supplement called JointGenesis to help with the internal stiffness. It’s supposed to help with hyaluronan levels which we lose as we get older, and honestly, the combination of the two has made my mornings so much easier. No more ‘tin man’ feeling when I first stand up!

Does this work for back sleepers too? I can’t stay on my side for long because of my shoulder, so I usually end up flat on my back.

For back sleepers, you actually want the pillow under your knees, not between them. It takes the pressure off your lumbar spine. Give that a try tonight!

Great advice. I’m going to try the knee pillow tonight. I’ve been struggling with hip bursitis and I’m willing to try anything at this point.

I travel quite a bit and I’ve found that even a rolled-up hotel towel works in a pinch if they don’t have extra pillows. It’s all about that hip spacing.

It’s amazing how these small mechanical changes make such a big impact over 8 hours of sleep. Thanks for sharing your experience, Dave.
