Does playing bridge sharpen focus?

I recently joined a local bridge club after years of thinking it was too complicated. To my surprise, the mental math and strategy have really cleared up my afternoon brain fog. It feels like my processing speed has jumped back a decade!

The social interaction paired with the high-stakes logic seems to be the perfect mix for me. I feel much more alert during the day now.

Have any of you tried complex card games or strategy-based hobbies lately? Do you find that the social element helps your focus more than solo puzzles?

My husband and I started playing Pinochle with neighbors. It definitely keeps you on your toes!

I’ve been a chess player for forty years, but I noticed a real shift when I started playing in timed tournaments. The pressure forces your brain to stop wandering. I think the social aspect is huge because you can’t just ‘pause’ like you do with a crossword. You have to stay engaged for the whole hour.

Bridge is legendary for a reason. There was actually a study I read a while back suggesting that the bidding process in bridge stimulates the part of the brain responsible for planning and multitasking. I haven’t played in years, but this makes me want to dust off my cards. I usually just do Sudoku, but it’s getting a bit lonely and repetitive. Maybe the interaction is the missing ingredient for me.

Is it hard to learn from scratch at 65? I’m worried I’ll just frustrate the veterans!
