Does spacing out fluids help your digestion?

For years, I followed the advice to drink as much water as possible whenever I could. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with a more structured approach: drinking heavily between meals but limiting intake to small sips while actually eating. The logic often cited is that too much liquid might dilute digestive enzymes, though the scientific consensus on this seems mixed at best. Personally, I’ve noticed I feel less heavy and bloated after dinner when I stick to this habit. It’s hard to say if it’s the lack of water or if I’m just chewing my food more thoroughly because my mouth isn’t as wet. It’s a small adjustment, but it feels like it gives my stomach a bit more of a head start. I’m curious if anyone else here has tried separating their hydration from their meals? It’s not a miracle cure, but these subtle shifts in timing seem to matter more now that I’m in my sixties. It might just be anecdotal, but it’s been a low-effort change for me.

I’ve heard this before but always found it hard to implement. I usually reach for my glass of water out of habit every three bites.

The enzyme dilution theory is pretty debated in the medical community, but if it works for you, that’s what matters. I find that a warm cup of tea about thirty minutes after eating helps me much more than drinking cold water during the meal.

I started doing this about six months ago on the advice of a nutritionist. For me, the biggest benefit wasn’t necessarily the ‘enzymes’ but the fact that I stopped washing down food that I hadn’t chewed properly. When you don’t have a beverage to help the food go down, you’re forced to use your own saliva and chew much longer. That alone made a huge difference in my bloating.

Does this apply to coffee too? I can’t imagine having my breakfast without my mug of coffee right there next to me.

I try to stop drinking about 15 minutes before I sit down to eat. It took a while to get used to, but I think there’s something to it. My stomach feels less ‘sloshy’ if that makes any sense.

Very interesting. I might give this a try starting tomorrow.

It’s funny how these small ‘old fashioned’ habits often have some merit. My grandmother always insisted on no water at the table, just a small glass of wine or nothing at all. We thought she was just being strict, but maybe she was onto something regarding how the body processes a heavy meal.
