The reason many probiotics don’t yield results is that people often pick the wrong strain. Instead of looking at brands, prioritize strains that have clinical backing for your particular needs.
Recommended Strains:
- IBS and Bloating: Bifidobacterium longum 35624 (found in Align) is the most established for this.
- Overall Digestive Health: Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (found in Culturelle) is a sturdy, well-studied option.
- Diarrhea from Antibiotics: Saccharomyces boulardii, which is actually a yeast, is highly effective here.
The Critical Factor: Survival
If the bacteria can’t make it past your stomach acid, it won’t help. Look for spore-based options (like Bacillus coagulans) or enteric coatings. Keeping them refrigerated is usually a good indicator of quality.
(Note: I created a probiotic beverage in the UK. I’ve posted a detailed breakdown of these strains and the science on my site—link on my profile page. I’m happy to help with any questions.)

Hi, I’ve been using Lactobacillus rhamnosus from the Culturelle brand (15 billion) for about three weeks now to help with my OCD.
I use the Probio Bacteria Matrix®, which contains 10 billion beneficial bacteria from 7 different strains: L. acidophilus, L. casei, B. lactis, L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, S. thermophilus, and B. bifidum. It’s honestly been a godsend for me.
What strain would you recommend for frequent, urgent bowel movements and soft stools, especially in the morning?
Do you know of a good probiotic for someone with MTHFR Homozygous, slow COMT, and autism? Thanks so much!
What about dealing with maintenance insomnia? Can any probiotics help with staying asleep?

I’ve experimented with several patented strains like BC30, DE111, SNZ1969, and MTCC 5856, but nothing seems to help my stomach issues as much as plain homemade yogurt. If I don’t have it daily, the bloating comes back. This started after I had COVID in 2023. I think a cheap, multi-strain probiotic I took made things worse by increasing the bloating. I suspect COVID killed off my good bacteria, or maybe it’s SIBO, but since yogurt works, I haven’t brought it up to my doctor. I make mine in an InstantPot using Chobani as a starter and sometimes add La-14 for extra tartness.
Are there any strains for fatigue or anxiety? I’ve found Finnesa (got mine here) to be excellent for my gut balance and digestion, but I’m wondering if specific strains are better for those issues.

What are your thoughts on this probiotic? It’s pretty expensive! I really like your brand, by the way, OP.
Does it actually matter what time of day you take them?
Any suggestions for daily diarrhea, low energy, and brain fog that hits right after eating?
Yakult works for me; it has the L-Shirota strain. It helps with bloating, and I make sure to keep it refrigerated.
Any advice for improving gut health directly? I’m also interested in something that might help restore serotonin balance.
