Hello! I’ve been dealing with nail fungus since my early 20s, so it’s been over two decades now. I didn’t mind it much before, but I’ve relocated to a hotter region where people usually go barefoot or wear sandals, and I’d like to do the same without feeling self-conscious. My physician suggested a nine-month oral drug regimen to fully eliminate the infection. I’m open to it, but I’m hesitant if there’s a high chance of recurrence after all that effort and risk. I read about someone combining oral meds with a topical follow-up to prevent it from returning. Could that be the trick?
I’d appreciate hearing your positive or negative stories with oral treatments. Thanks!

I tried pulse dosing with both major oral antifungals. They both worked initially, but the fungus returned after a few months each time. My GP and dermatologist weren’t very keen on these drugs because of the possibility of severe, even fatal, side effects. (Definitely research that if you haven’t; the risks are genuine.) Currently, I manage it by applying a drop of undecylenic acid tincture (specifically ‘Elon Dual Defense’ from Amazon) every morning with the built-in brush. Since nail fungus takes a long time to treat, I’m hoping a couple of years of this will eventually clear it from the root. I might consider another round of oral meds if supervised by a specialist. Being older now, I’m more worried about potential liver or organ damage. On the bright side, the daily tincture keeps my nails looking decent even if the root infection remains. Since you’re in a warm area, maybe try wearing sandals more often to keep things dry and get some sun, as both help. Best of luck!
A three-month course of oral Terbinafine worked perfectly for me. It took about a year to fully grow out, but my nails are completely healthy now. I also apply Curanail once every two weeks as a preventative measure since getting the Terbinafine prescription from my doctor was such a hassle.
I had a prescription, but the massive list of potential side effects and the requirement for liver testing every month really intimidated me.
I took a year-long course of oral medication two decades ago, and it entirely cured my fungus.
I struggled with fungus on all my toes for eight years. Nothing worked until I tried oral terbinafine three months ago, and now they’re all clear! I actually only took it for four weeks. I did get my liver checked recently, which is recommended with this medication. I have zero regrets.
Do you have any news on how your treatment turned out? I’d love an update!
My infection returned about a year after finishing a four-month course. I’ve had it for 25 years, and it’s back on the same toes. My doctor never told me to replace my socks and shoes, so make sure you do that to avoid wasting your time.
