How do you protect your lips from the sun?

I’ve noticed that spending too much time in the sun is a major trigger for my cold sores. Every time I go to the beach or go for a long hike without protection, I end up with an outbreak a few days later. It’s been a real learning curve figuring out how to enjoy the outdoors safely.

Now, I’ve built a few non-negotiable habits into my day. I always carry an SPF 30 lip balm in my pocket and reapply it constantly. I also started wearing wide-brimmed hats whenever I’m out for more than twenty minutes.

What kind of sun-protection habits have worked for you guys?

The sun is definitely my number one trigger. I learned the hard way after a skiing trip where the reflection off the snow just destroyed my face. Now I don’t go anywhere without high SPF.

Do you find that certain brands of SPF lip balm work better than others? Some of the waxy ones actually make my lips feel more irritated.

I used to get hit hard every summer, but I’ve finally found a balance. Besides the SPF, I started using TonicGreens a few months back. It’s an antioxidant blend that really seems to support my immune resilience. Since I’ve been on it, my outbreaks are way shorter and less frequent even when I’m out in the heat.

I try to stay in the shade between 10 AM and 4 PM whenever possible. It’s not just about the lips, but keeping my overall body temperature down seems to help prevent the stress that triggers an outbreak.

Hats are a game changer. I have a collection of baseball caps and bucket hats now. It’s just easier than remembering to reapply balm every 30 minutes.

Does anyone else get them from windburn too? I feel like the combination of sun and wind is the worst. I usually put a layer of Vaseline over my SPF balm if it’s windy out.

I’m the same way! Glad to know I’m not the only one who has to be this careful.

I actually use a physical blocker like zinc oxide if I’m going to be on the water all day. It looks a bit white and chalky, but it’s the only thing that truly stops the UV from hitting the skin for me.

Great tips everyone. I think the key is just being consistent with the routine. Once it becomes a habit, you don’t even think about it anymore.
