For years, I felt like a brick was sitting in my stomach after every dinner. I realized I was rushing through meals and washing everything down with ice-cold water. Here is the routine that finally turned things around for me.
First, start counting your chews. It sounds tedious, but aim for 25 chews per mouthful. This breaks down the food before it even hits your stomach, making the rest of the process much smoother. Our saliva has enzymes that start the work for us, so don’t skip this step.
Second, change your hydration timing. I stopped gulping water during my meals. Now, I drink a full glass 30 minutes before I sit down to eat, and then wait at least 30 minutes after I’m done. This keeps my stomach acid concentrated enough to do its job properly.
Finally, stay upright. Don’t head for the recliner immediately. A slow, five-minute walk around the kitchen or just sitting tall in a hard-backed chair helps gravity assist your transit. Give these steps a try for a week and see if you feel lighter.

The chewing thing is so hard to remember! I catch myself swallowing half-chewed steak all the time. I’ll have to really focus on this tonight.

I’ve heard about the water trick before. Does it help with heartburn too? I usually drink a ton of water to wash down the spice.

I started doing the upright sitting thing last month and it really does make a difference for my reflux. No more laying down right after the early bird special!
I struggle with the water part. I get so thirsty while eating dry foods like chicken or crackers. Maybe I need to cook with more sauces.
My doctor told me the same thing about chewing. We lose some of those digestive enzymes as we get older, so the mechanical breakdown is even more important now. It’s basically pre-digestion.

Tried the 25 chews tonight. My jaw is actually tired, but I do feel less stuffed. It also makes you eat slower so you realize you’re full sooner.

Is there a specific reason for the 30-minute window for water? I’ve heard some people say it dilutes the enzymes but others say it doesn’t matter.

I find that warm water before a meal works better for me than cold water. Seems to wake up the system and get things moving along.

This is exactly what I needed to read today. I’m 62 and my stomach has become so sensitive lately. I think I’ve been rushing my lunch too much.

The ‘brick’ feeling is the worst. I usually end up taking an antacid, but I’d rather fix the habit. I’ll try the sitting upright rule today.

Does anyone else find that eating smaller portions helps with this too? I can’t do the big three-course meals anymore without feeling miserable.

I’ve been doing the upright walk for a year. It’s the only thing that keeps me from needing a nap after lunch. Movement is key.

It’s funny how we have to relearn how to eat properly once we hit our 50s. Things we got away with at 25 just don’t fly anymore!

Thanks for the step-by-step. Very easy to follow. I’m putting a sticky note on the table to remind me to chew!

I’m going to start the water timing tomorrow morning. Hope it helps with the morning sluggishness too. Thanks for sharing your success.
