It has been about six months since my optometrist suggested I start a specific AREDS2 supplement regimen for my macular health. I was a bit skeptical at first, thinking it was just another pill to add to my morning routine, but I’ve actually noticed some subtle, positive changes in how I handle my daily reading. I’m no longer reaching for the magnifying glass as often when looking at small print on food labels, and my eyes don’t feel quite as exhausted by the time I finish the evening news.
Of course, it hasn’t been a miracle cure, but the stability is what I’m most grateful for. I’ve also been more diligent about using a warm-toned reading lamp and taking breaks every twenty minutes. It feels like these small adjustments are finally starting to pay off in terms of comfort.
I’m curious to hear from others in the group. Have any of you noticed a difference after sticking with a supplement plan for a few months? Do you find that lighting makes a bigger difference for you than the vitamins themselves?

I’m so glad to hear this! I’ve been on the AREDS formula for two years now and my specialist says my scans are looking very stable. Consistency is definitely key.

Which brand are you using? My doctor mentioned PreserVision but I haven’t started yet because I wasn’t sure if it actually did anything.

I think the lighting is the real secret. I bought one of those OttLite floor lamps for my reading chair and it was a total game changer for reading the newspaper.

I’ve been taking them too, but honestly, I think the biggest help for me was just enlarging the default font on my Kindle and switching to the ‘sepia’ background mode.

That’s wonderful progress, Martha. It’s the little wins that count as we get older.

I agree with the supplement approach. My last checkup showed my macula looks stable, which is the main goal. It’s more about preventing the ‘wet’ version for me.

Be careful with the zinc in those vitamins though. It gave me a bit of an upset stomach until I started taking it with a full meal instead of just coffee.

I tried them for three months but didn’t notice much. Maybe I didn’t give it enough time? I’ve been trying to focus more on eating leafy greens instead.

For me, it’s all about the ‘20-20-20’ rule you mentioned. Looking at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes really helps the eye strain during my crosswords.

I’m curious if you’ve changed your diet too? I’ve been eating way more kale and spinach lately alongside the vitamins. My doctor says it’s a ‘belt and suspenders’ approach.

Reading music was getting so hard for me. Between the supplements and better overhead lighting in my studio, I’m feeling much more confident during long lessons.

Stability is the win here. If things aren’t getting worse, that’s a massive victory in my book.

They are so expensive! I always wait for the buy-one-get-one-free sales at the pharmacy to stock up for the whole year.

My ophthalmologist said the vitamins are more for prevention of progression than ‘fixing’ vision, but I swear my night vision feels slightly sharper lately too.

I use a rechargeable neck light for my knitting and it helps so much more than anything else I’ve tried. Good lighting is underrated.

Thanks for sharing this update, Martha. It gives me some hope that I might see a bit of improvement if I stay consistent with my own prescription.
