Last night I hit a milestone: a steakhouse birthday dinner without the carb coma. At 54, my metabolism doesn’t forgive a bread-basket binge like it used to. I stayed keto by following these simple steps.
First, order a large sparkling water immediately to keep your hands busy while others eat bread. Second, ask the server to replace the potato with sautéed spinach or double broccoli before the plate arrives. Third, focus on the social connection rather than the food.
It felt great to wake up without the bloat. What would you do?

The bread basket is my absolute nemesis! Good for you for sending it back before it even hit the table.

I usually look at the menu online before I even leave the house. If I already know what I’m getting, I’m much less likely to be tempted by the specials or what others are ordering. It’s a total game changer for my social anxiety too.

Being over 50 means the ‘cheat meal’ lingers for three days. I do the same thing with the water, but I also try to eat a small high-protein snack about an hour before I go out. If I’m not starving when I sit down, the rolls don’t look nearly as good as they usually do.

Double broccoli is the way to go. Most places are happy to swap these days without any fuss.

What about the dessert tray? That’s where they always get me. I’ve started bringing my own little square of 90% dark chocolate in my purse just in case everyone else decides to order the lava cake.
