I finally stopped my late night heartburn and bloating

Day 1: I am 62 years old and my stomach has been a total disaster for the last five years. I finally decided to stop eating my main meal at 7:30 PM because the reflux was killing me. I swapped my schedule to have a heavy lunch at 1 PM and just a light bowl of soup or some Greek yogurt around 5:30 PM. I went to bed feeling a bit hungry, but I was curious to see if it would help with the morning tightness.

Week 1: The hunger pangs at night were definitely tough to get used to, but I noticed something immediately. I was no longer waking up with that sour, acidic taste in the back of my throat. My stomach felt significantly flatter in the morning, rather than feeling like a hard basketball. I also started adding a tablespoon of raw sauerkraut to my lunch every day to see if the natural probiotics would help the transit time.

Week 3: This is where the real magic happened. My digestion used to be completely unpredictable, alternating between totally stuck and the exact opposite. Now, I am having a regular, easy movement every single morning like clockwork. The bloating I used to get right after lunch has completely vanished. I think the smaller evening meals are finally giving my system the break it needs to actually process food properly instead of it just sitting there overnight.

Month 2: I honestly cannot remember the last time I reached for the antacids. I have lost about five pounds without even trying, mostly because I am not mindlessly snacking in front of the TV at night anymore. My energy levels throughout the day are much more stable, and I do not get that foggy feeling after eating. My sleep has improved significantly as well, since I am not dealing with reflux while trying to drift off. If you are struggling with similar issues, I really recommend trying to move your main calories earlier in the day. It is a simple change, but it made a world of difference for my gut.

This is so encouraging to hear. I’ve been thinking about trying the ‘early bird’ dinner for a while now.

Did you find the sauerkraut hard to get used to? I tried it once but the saltiness was a bit much for me.

The late night eating is my biggest downfall. With my husband getting home late from work, it’s our only time to sit together, but my stomach pays for it every single night. I might have to just sit with him while he eats and have my meal earlier.

Great update! Did you notice any difference in your joint pain? I’ve heard gut health and inflammation are linked.

I’m skeptical that just changing the time makes that much of a difference, but I’m desperate enough to try anything at this point. My doctor just keeps suggesting more pills.

To the person asking about the sauerkraut—make sure you get the stuff from the refrigerated section! The shelf-stable canned stuff is pasteurized and doesn’t have the live cultures you need. I started making my own and it’s much less salty than the store brands.

So glad you’re feeling better! It’s amazing how much our gut affects our overall mood too.

Which brand of yogurt are you using for your evening snack? I find some of them are so loaded with sugar they actually make my bloating worse.
