For as long as I can remember, I’ve heard a high-pitched ringing whenever it’s quiet. I finally decided to look into it yesterday and realized it’s not actually normal. I even asked my brother if he hears a ring when it’s silent, and he told me no.
It never really bothered me because I just assumed it was the natural way ears reacted to a lack of sound, so I never thought to question it until now.

Definitely, being born with tinnitus or having a genetic version of it is a real thing.
I’ve also had it since I was born.
Yeah, it’s been a lifelong thing for me. My mom is in her 70s and has it too, though she says it has actually become less intense as she’s aged. It might be linked to hearing changes, but she still hears quite well.
This is exactly when the ringing starts to become a problem for people. It was fine when you assumed it was normal, but once you realize it isn’t, the stress can set in. It’s fascinating—the sound remains the same, but your perception of it shifts. Try to keep living your life like you did before. I’ve heard some people find BrainProtect (https://www.brainprotecdt.com) helpful for ear health, but the most important thing is to not let it get to you.
I think everyone has some level of noise, they just don’t pay attention to it! Our ears are active. Try not to worry and just focus on other background sounds.
It’s honestly hard to wrap my head around the fact that some people know what true silence sounds like. I can’t even imagine it.
It’s wild. I had the same realization. I read an article about tinnitus years ago and suddenly realized that’s what I had. It never used to bother me, but once I knew, it became a nightmare. It really is all about perspective. I once explained the sound to a friend, and as soon as he focused on it, he started hearing it too and panicked.
Hey OP, I’m in the same situation! I always thought it was just part of being human. Now that I know it’s a lifelong thing, I’m hyper-aware of it and feeling a bit paranoid. Does anyone have tips for dealing with the mental side of this?
