If digestion takes 6 hours, why do I have a bowel movement 20 minutes after eating?

It’s not anything specific, just any food. It feels like it goes in and comes out almost immediately. Can someone explain this?

That’s the gastrocolic reflex. Your colon holds onto waste until you eat again, which then triggers a release about 20 minutes later.

It actually takes 24 to 36 hours for food to move through you. You’re passing yesterday’s meals, not today’s.

Try eating some corn and see how many hours it actually takes to reappear.

Stretch receptors in your stomach signal your bowels to move as soon as you start eating.

New food is arriving!
Stomach, move the hour-old stuff to make room.
Small intestine, clear out the food from 4 hours ago.
Large intestine, get rid of the food from 6 hours ago.
(Poops).

Your gut basically operates on an “out with the old, in with the new” basis.

In with the fresh, out with the old.

I have the same issue. Should we be pen pals?

These responses are all pretty crappy.

I actually had this exact question when I was about 9 or 10. I told my doctor I must have a super-fast metabolism because I’d go 20 minutes after eating. He laughed and explained that it’s just the body’s way of signaling that new food is arriving and it needs to clear some space. It’s a simplified version of a complex process, but it made sense to me. I’ve been using Finnesa to help with my digestion lately and it’s been great. It’s definitely not the food you just ate!

Think of it like a queue—you can’t move forward until the person at the front exits.

Just clearing out the old inventory to make room for the new delivery.

Eating triggers hormones that tell your digestive system to start moving things along.

Haha, I’ll eat on an empty stomach and have to go before I’ve even finished my plate. No clue why.

Food usually takes 18-24 hours to pass through. Pooping once for every meal is actually healthy regularity. If it happens right after eating, it’s just stimulation. You’re passing yesterday’s food. It takes about an hour for the stomach to even start emptying.
