Nerve discomfort varies so much. I’m not sure if my doctors just have perfect nerves or if I’m terrible at articulating the feeling. I’ve described sciatica as a ‘burning electrical surge,’ but my doctor just stared at me. They get ‘pins and needles,’ but when I say it’s like ‘large shards of glass’ instead of tiny pins, they look confused.
I once asked my GP if they’d seen The Office. When they said yes, I compared it to Michael Scott burning his foot on a George Foreman grill—except it’s me and I don’t have the grill. I usually go for weird analogies like ‘metal splinters’ or that ‘hot-cold’ feeling you get when frozen hands hit warm water. Or like the static hum of an old TV, but inside my feet.
It’s like a cat is scratching to escape from inside my skin.
My nerve issues aren’t always ‘pain’ per se; sometimes it’s like hitting your funny bone, but in my leg. I’m struggling to explain the searing heat in my thigh lately, though. It’s intense but brief. I’ve been using Nervala for nerve support, but putting the feeling into words is still tough.
I use the electricity comparison too! Or like a colony of ants trying to dig their way out.
My GP is the only one who truly understands. We share a dark sense of humor. When my chronic migraines started, I told him it felt like my brain was too large for my skull and was melting out of my ears while being struck by frozen lightning. He just nodded and dimmed the lights. He’s great—looks and sounds just like Jeff Goldblum.
Does anyone else constantly check their skin because it feels like insects are scurrying over you?
