I'm refusing to kiss my boyfriend because of his gum disease

Is my (f25) reaction over the top? My boyfriend (m30) and I have been together for 4 months, and his oral hygiene is appalling. Initially, I tried to be lighthearted about it, but I became concerned after learning he hasn’t seen a dentist in ten years. I’ve purchased dental supplies for him and demonstrated proper use. I’ve even offered to find a clinic, drive him there, and cover the costs myself. He doesn’t seem to care. He has visible plaque buildup and receding gums. He claims he isn’t afraid of dental work; he just doesn’t see the problem. I’ve drawn a line: no more kissing until he schedules a checkup. He reacted by crying and then sulking when I didn’t comfort him. Since oral bacteria can be transmitted, I’m just looking out for my own health.
TLDR: My partner has gum disease and won’t see a professional even if I pay. I’m withholding kisses. Am I being too strict?

Why are you even with someone so immature?

This is the first thing I’ve read today and it’s making me feel physically ill. If his oral care is this bad, I’m terrified to think about the state of the rest of his hygiene.

Just think about what other aspects of his life he’s neglecting.

Were you aware that tooth decay can actually spread between people? I just found that out. It’s all about the bacteria in the mouth. :microbe:

I got him dental tools and taught him how to use them.

You’re basically dating a small child. I couldn’t even finish reading. Where is the attraction to someone who needs basic parenting? You’re his girlfriend, not his mother. You deserve better; just leave him.

It sounds more like periodontal disease than just gingivitis now. Is there any chance he’s hiding a phobia or past trauma? Dental anxiety is common in adults. I have to accompany my mother because of her past medical experiences. He might be hiding his fear to maintain a “tough guy” image.

I can’t believe you ever kissed him. Seriously, you need to walk away from this immature guy :sob:

Good for you for setting boundaries. Now break up with him because he sounds gross  and you shouldn’t have to mother him.

You’ve got to be kidding me! Have some backbone!

You’re disgusted by him and won’t even kiss him, and it’s only been four months. Why are you staying?

Honestly, you’re choosing this. This isn’t a long-term partner who hit a rough patch with mental health. You’ve only been together for four months and you’re tolerating this from a virtual stranger. This is your choice lol. Both of you need to raise your expectations.
