I’ve put in a disability claim for my damaged toenails. My issues started in the service with an ingrown nail that a medic treated at sick call. It eventually turned into a fungus. I’ve had the nails pulled several times over the years, and it eventually spread to nearly every toe. The VA even performed a “permanent removal” on both big toes, but they partially grew back, which is frustrating. I’m wondering if anyone else has gone through this claim process and what rating you received? All ten toes have fungus, I still get ingrowns on the smaller ones, and I deal with pain roughly once a month.
I’m currently waiting on a decision for a very similar claim. Based on my look into it, they categorize it as a skin ailment. This means the rating is usually tied to how much of your total body surface is affected. Since toenails only account for about 1% of the body, the standard minimum rating usually ends up being 10%.
I submitted my claim for toenail fungus in March 2020 and was awarded a 30% rating for all ten toes. Even though only about 5% of the area was involved, I still got 30%. It seems like the specific rater you get can make a big difference.
I’m rated at 10% for onychomycosis in both feet, but I had to file a Higher Level Review to get that. It’s difficult to get a higher percentage because of the way they measure the affected area against the whole body. It’s not impossible, but in most cases I’ve seen, 10% is the standard outcome.
