Inquiry regarding IgE results and lab work

[22F, non-smoker/drinker, history of dust and pollen allergies, daily cetirizine, B12, and vitamin D supplements]

Hi there,

I recently underwent extensive blood and stool testing because my doctor suspected Celiac disease due to symptoms like bloating, mucus, and rectal bleeding.

The stool samples didn’t show any infections.

Most of my blood work was within the normal range, except for these two:

  • White blood cells: 3.35 x10^9/L (range 3.50-11.00)
  • Neutrophils: 1.32 x10^9/L (range 2.00-8.00)

My doctor didn’t reach out about these, and since I came down with a cold the night after the blood draw, I assume that’s why they were low.

However, I just received my immunology findings and I’m quite confused. My IgE level is 832 kU/L, which is incredibly high compared to the reference limit of <114.

In the email, my doctor suggested further allergy testing, but the options are extremely pricey and I simply can’t afford them on minimum wage. Besides, I already have a good idea of what my allergy triggers are.

Is a result this high something I need to worry about, or is it likely just a reflection of the allergies I already know I have?

I apologize if this is a basic question; I’m just unsure how to proceed given my financial situation.

Thanks for your time and have a great day! :smiling_face_with_tear:

I recently got comprehensive bloodwork

This highlights why ordering ‘broad’ panels just to see what happens is generally discouraged. Reference ranges are statistical benchmarks; falling outside of them isn’t a definitive sign of disease. You’ve ended up with results that have no clear clinical meaning, which is only serving to increase your anxiety.
