I’m a staunch leftist. I don’t align with the principles or behavior of most conservative women I see on social media, especially those spreading regressive messages. However, I’m tired of seeing people on our side attack these women by ridiculing their appearance or age. I see comments mocking their looks or claiming they look decades older than they are, and it’s deeply uncomfortable. If we are committed to feminism, how can we use the same sexist and ageist insults we’d condemn if they were directed at a liberal? It’s hypocritical. Shaming women for their looks is a patriarchal tactic used to keep us insecure. Why would we adopt it? Aging is natural, and we should be able to exist without being reduced to how well we fit a beauty standard. We can disagree with someone’s politics without dehumanizing them. I don’t have to like them to realize that attacking their appearance just supports the very systems we want to change. Is anyone else bothered by this, or am I just being too sensitive?
The only aspect of the MAGA/Republican aesthetic I find worth discussing is the way many of them—particularly those in office—seem to adopt a specific “uniform.” It isn’t a traditional conservative look; it’s a distinct MAGA style. It’s fascinating to watch how some women signal their political shift by adopting these specific procedures. I’m keeping my tone neutral here, in line with your post, OP.
I haven’t come across those posts. I do see people talk about “Mar-a-Lago face,” but that refers to a specific phenomenon of identical plastic surgery and hair styles. I think discussing trends in cosmetic work is fair game.
I refuse to call anyone ugly or mock their body. I will, however, point out the hypocrisy of someone getting cosmetic surgery while trying to deny my trans sister the right to do the same.
Their looks aren’t what’s ugly; it’s the hateful things they say.
