It has been six weeks since my surgery for a detached retina, and I wanted to share a quick update on my recovery. The first few weeks were incredibly difficult with the gas bubble, but things are finally looking up.
Recent improvements:
- The gas bubble has shrunk to a tiny speck in my lower vision.
- My central vision is returning, though it remains slightly distorted.
- That terrifying “curtain” feeling is completely gone.
I am still taking it slow with physical activity, but I am curious if others noticed the distortion lasting this long?

Glad to hear the bubble is almost gone! That was the hardest part for me, just waiting for that little black line to disappear.

The distortion (my doctor called it metamorphopsia) can take quite a while to settle down. I’m six months out and I still notice straight lines look a bit wavy if I close my good eye. It does get better though!

Did your surgeon mention anything about your cataract? Usually, these surgeries accelerate cataract growth, which might be causing some of the lingering blurriness you are seeing.

I had my vitrectomy last year. The first month was pure misery because of the face-down positioning. Once I was allowed to sit up, my vision was still very ‘funhouse mirror’ for about three months. My surgeon said the brain eventually learns to ignore some of that distortion, and he was right. Just be patient with your brain as much as your eye.

Make sure you wear your sunglasses outside. The light sensitivity was wild for me for the first two months.

Was yours a gas bubble or silicone oil? I had the oil and had to have a second surgery to remove it, so my timeline was much longer.

I’m at the 4-week mark today. Still have half a bubble left. It’s encouraging to hear you’re seeing better at 6 weeks.

Don’t forget to keep up with the drops. Even when it feels better, the inflammation can sneak back up on you if you stop the steroid drops too early.

When did your doctor clear you to drive? I’m still nervous about my depth perception.
The distortion lasted about 4 months for me. It was most noticeable when looking at tiled floors or door frames. It eventually smoothed out significantly, though it’s not 100% perfect. Most days I don’t even notice it anymore.
