Is raw food hurting your gut?

As we get older, our digestive fire often slows down. Many of us try to eat healthier by loading up on massive raw salads, but this can actually cause significant bloating and gas for some.

Follow these simple steps to help your gut:

  1. Try lightly steaming or roasting your greens instead of eating them raw. This pre-digests tough fibers.
  2. Focus on warm meals like soups or slow-cooked stews which are much gentler on the stomach.
  3. Track your symptoms to see if your body prefers cooked over raw.

Small changes in food preparation can make a huge difference in your daily comfort.

I’ve been eating raw kale for years and wondering why I’m so bloated every afternoon. I never thought about the temperature or the texture being the issue.

Exactly! I switched to vegetable soups last winter and felt 100% better. My gut just doesn’t seem to have the energy to break down those big raw stalks anymore.

Does this apply to fruit as well? I usually have a big bowl of cold berries and melon for breakfast.

I noticed this too after I turned 60. I switched to roasted veggies and started taking Finnesa for some extra support with my liver and colon health. It really helped smooth out my digestion during the transition.

Does this mean I have to cook my spinach too? I love it in my smoothies.

Lightly sautéing it in olive oil is usually enough to soften the fibers. You can even blanch it quickly before putting it in a smoothie if you really want to be safe.

Great advice, thank you. I’m going to try steaming my broccoli tonight instead of having it raw with dip.

I always thought raw was the only way to get the nutrients. It’s a relief to know I can cook them because I honestly prefer warm food anyway, especially in the evening.

My grandmother always said ‘cook it until it’s soft’ and maybe she was onto something. We used to think she was overcooking everything, but maybe she just knew her limits!

I still love my salads though. It’s hard to give up that crunch.

Maybe try a warm salad with roasted squash? You still get some texture but it’s much easier on the stomach than raw cabbage or kale.

The bloating is the worst part. I’ll try steaming tonight and see if I can finally sleep without that heavy feeling.

Is it the same for carrots? I eat them raw for the crunch.
