Is your medication causing hidden gut issues?

After I turned 60, I started taking a daily aspirin for heart health and ibuprofen for my knee arthritis. I never thought twice about it until my stomach started feeling constantly irritated and acidic. A common mistake many of us make as we get older is ignoring how our various medications interact with our digestive lining. We focus on the benefits for our joints or heart but forget that the gut becomes more sensitive to these substances over time. For example, my brother was taking calcium supplements on an empty stomach and couldn’t figure out his bloating until his doctor suggested taking them with food. It’s not just about what we eat, but the pills we swallow alongside our meals. If you’re dealing with new indigestion, it’s worth looking at your medicine cabinet. Sometimes the fix for one problem is the source of another.

I had the exact same issue with my blood pressure meds. I switched to taking them at night and it really helped the daytime nausea.

This is such a good point. People forget that even ‘natural’ vitamins can be hard on the stomach lining if you take too many at once.

I was taking ibuprofen like candy for my back pain until I ended up with a small ulcer. My doctor was not happy with me! Now I use topical gels instead to save my stomach.

Does anyone know if statins cause bloating? I started them last month and feel like a balloon.

Linda, I had that with statins too. My doctor told me to take them with a larger meal and it actually settled down after about three weeks. Might be worth asking your pharmacist about the timing.

It’s a tough balance when you need the meds to stay mobile but they make you feel sick. I’ve started keeping a ‘gut diary’ to track which pills cause the most trouble.

Don’t forget to check with your doctor before changing how you take prescriptions. Some have to be taken on an empty stomach to work right.
