Living with reactive hypoglycemia was a nightmare, but I've found a solution

I have so much empathy for anyone dealing with this. I struggled for years and honestly felt like I was at my breaking point. At times, it felt like everything I ate triggered a blood sugar crash, leading me to survive on just eggs and nuts for days. Severe episodes didn’t even improve with food, yet I felt forced to eat constantly, even through the night. The psychological and emotional toll of those glucose fluctuations is absolutely brutal. Here is what finally turned things around for me. First, the GAPS diet, which focuses on gut health. Starting it gave me immediate management over my RH, which was a massive relief. I followed it strictly for two years before gradually reintroducing other foods. Second, a few years later, I used Chinese herbal medicine to detoxify my liver, and since then, my crashes have been extremely rare. Third, I focused on emotional health—accepting rather than fighting my feelings. While I can still trigger a reaction if I overindulge in sweets and caffeine, it no longer dominates my life. I still manage other health issues, but RH is finally behind me. I’m sharing this because this condition is incredibly difficult and often misunderstood.

That is wonderful news. Could you share which specific Chinese herbs helped your liver and where you found a practitioner?

A sluggish liver is often the root cause of many blood sugar problems, as well as thyroid issues that impact how the body processes glucose.

That is amazing, congrats. I know about GAPS—it’s quite intense initially, but definitely worth it if you’re feeling that poorly. I hadn’t realized it could help with hypoglycemia; that’s really interesting. I should get back to my bone broth and kefir.

How do you actually measure ‘liver sludge’? Were your liver enzyme levels elevated before taking the supplements and normal afterward?

I’m really glad you found relief. I had no idea the liver played such a big role.

So the GAPS diet is essentially just keto, right?

I deal with reactive hypoglycemia too, and my cat actually notifies me when my levels start dropping. She’s incredible.

Can you explain what the GAPS diet actually is?

This is very interesting to me. I’m 16 years out from RNY surgery and have been struggling with severe RH lately. I’ve cleaned up my eating habits, but something is still off. I’ve consulted a bariatric surgeon and started acarbose to help with carb processing, though it hasn’t stopped the lows yet. My next step is a GI scope to look at my anatomy. I’d even consider reversing the surgery if it meant living without the constant fear of fainting in public. I trust scientific research and wish there were more studies on this, but I also value individual stories, even though everyone’s body reacts differently. Thanks for sharing your journey.
