Looking for tinnitus resources in Ireland? I'm in a state of crisis

I’ve been dealing with an agonizing and debilitating ringing in my ears for the past three weeks. I’m currently in the deepest emotional spiral I’ve ever experienced. Has anyone in Ireland found successful therapy or medical care for this? Is there even any hope? I feel so scared and isolated, like nobody understands the hell I’m in. Even my elderly mother’s tinnitus isn’t nearly as loud as what I’m hearing.

I don’t believe I can return to my job next week. I’m on the brink of a total mental collapse. The noise is just so incredibly loud. I’ve never faced a health issue this severe before, and I’m completely out of ways to cope.

UPDATE: I’ve been admitted to the psychiatric ward at the hospital.

Have you spoken with a doctor yet? Also, have you had a recent COVID infection? I’ve heard that COVID can sometimes trigger temporary tinnitus.

You should definitely see an ENT specialist. They can determine if the cause is nerve-related or something else entirely. You’ll likely need a hearing exam, which is provided for free. I recently visited one because my own tinnitus suddenly spiked in volume. I’ve lived with this since my early 20s, so I’ve learned to habituate before and I can do it again with this new level. Best of luck. Trying to accept the sound and move forward is very helpful in the long run. It’s tough, I know, but it is achievable.

I saw that you also posted in a subreddit for suicide prevention. Please go to your GP or the nearest A&E right now. Help is available for you.

I just want to tell you that I’ve been exactly where you are, and I truly get it. About three years ago, I woke up to an incredibly loud roaring and ringing out of nowhere. It wrecked my mental health for weeks until I slowly started to get used to it. Using a fan for white noise while sleeping was a huge help. Eventually, I adjusted and barely noticed it after a month. Then, about six weeks later, I woke up to total silence. It disappeared as suddenly as it started. I believe you’ll see improvement too. Stay strong. I’d suggest asking your doctor for a small prescription of Xanax or something similar for when the panic is too much. I promise it gets better. Those first few days are the worst. Sending love, please keep us posted.

I’m so sorry you’re enduring this. My tinnitus was caused by stress, so it eventually cleared up. I know how terrifying and awful it can be, so I’m wishing you a quick recovery.
