I’ve recently hit my late 40s, and I noticed that my usual dental routine—brushing twice a day and flossing—just wasn’t yielding the same results it used to. I was dealing with persistent plaque and a change in my breath that felt more internal than surface-level. After some reading, I realized that as we age, our oral microbiome can get out of whack, making it harder for our saliva to do its job. I decided to move away from the “scorched earth” approach of high-alcohol mouthwashes and focused on rebuilding my mouth’s natural defenses instead.
One of the things I incorporated into my daily routine was Dentavive (got mine here). I was intrigued by the idea of using specific probiotic strains like Lactobacillus reuteri and Bifidobacterium lactis BL-04 to help restore the oral environment. The logic is that these strains, combined with things like tricalcium phosphate, help with enamel remineralization and create a healthier bio-shield. It’s an interesting approach that looks at dental health from an ecological perspective rather than just mechanical cleaning.
Since making the switch about three months ago, I’ve noticed a few practical changes. The “fuzzy” feeling on my teeth in the evening is much less pronounced, and my gums don’t have that slight redness I was seeing in the mirror every morning. I also switched to a high-quality sonic toothbrush on the sensitive setting to avoid further gum recession. I can’t say for certain if it’s the supplement alone or the combination of factors, but my mouth feels significantly more balanced. It’s worth looking into if you feel like your standard routine is starting to fail you as you get older.

I’m glad you mentioned the oral microbiome. I’ve been using Dentavive for about six weeks now and the difference in my gum health is night and day. My hygienist actually asked what I was doing differently at my last cleaning.

Which alcohol-free mouthwash did you switch to? I’ve been looking for a replacement that doesn’t feel like it’s burning my cheeks off.
I noticed the same thing around 45. It’s like my teeth became magnets for plaque overnight. I think the ‘bio-shield’ concept makes a lot of sense as we get older and our saliva production naturally dips.

I can also vouch for Dentavive. I had a lot of sensitivity to cold water that wouldn’t go away with the usual sensitive toothpastes, but after a month of this, it’s almost entirely gone. Those probiotics really do seem to help with the enamel.

Does the tricalcium phosphate actually help with sensitivity? I’ve heard mixed things about remineralization supplements.

The sonic toothbrush was the best investment I ever made. I used to scrub too hard and my dentist was constantly lecturing me about my gums. Combining that with a more internal approach like you’re doing is probably the winning move.

Following this thread. My gums have been a mess since I turned 50.

I read somewhere that ancient populations had much better dental health because their diets didn’t feed the ‘bad’ bacteria. It’s interesting to see that research being applied to modern supplements. I’ve been focusing more on fermented foods for the same reason, but a targeted probiotic might be more efficient.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s a much more logical approach than just buying more aggressive toothbrushes.
