My daily protocol for keeping my stomach calm

I started focusing on a strict routine about six months ago. My stomach used to feel like it was in a knot every single morning.

I start at 7 AM with a large glass of room temperature water. No coffee until I’ve had at least 16 ounces of water. It makes a massive difference in how things move.

Breakfast is always the same now. I do steel-cut oats with a spoonful of ground flaxseeds and some blueberries. The flax is the secret ingredient for me. It provides that extra fiber without the gas I get from supplements.

I take a twenty-minute walk right after lunch. Even if it’s just around the block, the movement helps the digestive process kick in. I noticed a huge slump in energy if I just sat back down at my desk.

Dinner is finished by 6:30 PM. This was the hardest change to make. Giving my body four hours to digest before lying down has completely stopped my nighttime reflux.

I also stopped drinking carbonated water with meals. I stick to plain water or herbal tea. It sounds simple, but consistency is what actually changed my life. My gut feels predictable for the first time in years.

Glad to see flaxseeds mentioned. They changed everything for me too. I put them in my yogurt every morning.

The ‘no coffee before water’ rule is so hard but so worth it. I find if I cheat, I pay for it by noon with that acidic feeling in my throat.

Do you find the steel-cut oats hard to cook? I usually do overnight oats because I’m lazy in the morning, but I wonder if the texture of steel-cut is better for digestion. I’ve heard the extra processing of instant oats makes them less effective for fiber.

I’ve been trying to stop eating by 7 PM but my husband likes late dinners. It’s a struggle to balance social life with gut health at our age. I might have to start eating my main meal at 5 and just having a small snack with him.

Walking after lunch is underrated. It’s the best thing for blood sugar too. I started doing it last year and my bloating went down significantly. Even 10 minutes helps.

I’m curious about the carbonated water. I drink a lot of sparkling water because I hate plain tap. Does it really cause that much gas for you? I might need to trial a week without it.

This is a solid routine. Very similar to what my nutritionist recommended after I turned sixty. The timing of the last meal is the absolute key for avoiding that heavy feeling in the morning. If I eat past 8 PM, I wake up feeling like I haven’t slept at all.
