My slow journey to feeling lighter without buying expensive specialty supplements?

I’ve spent years rolling my eyes at those gut reset kits that cost $100. At 58, I figured my digestion was just what it was. But after a rough month of heartburn and heavy bloating, I decided to try a few free changes instead of buying into the hype.

Week 1: I just focused on chewing. Sounds silly, but I realized I was practically swallowing my lunch whole while working. By day five, that rock in the stomach feeling after eating started to fade.

Week 2: I stopped drinking icy water with my meals. I switched to room temperature or warm tea. I was skeptical this would do anything, but I noticed I wasn’t nearly as gassy by dinner time.

Week 3: I added a 10-minute walk after my biggest meal. This was the turning point. For the first time in a decade, I didn’t need an antacid before bed.

It’s been a month now. I haven’t spent a dime on fancy powders, and I feel better than I did at 45. It turns out the basics actually work if you are consistent.

The chewing thing is so real. My dentist actually told me the same thing years ago and I ignored him. Might be time to start listening.

I’m with you on the marketing stuff. Every time I open social media, someone is trying to sell me a $60 probiotic. It’s exhausting.

Does the warm water really help? I love my ice water, especially when it is hot outside. Not sure I can give that up.

Hank, I found that even just taking the ice out helped. It doesn’t have to be hot tea. I think the shock of the cold just shuts my stomach down mid-meal. George, that 10-minute walk is the gold standard. I started doing that after my doctor suggested it for blood sugar, but the digestive benefits were a huge bonus.

Love seeing a ‘back to basics’ post. We overcomplicate things way too much as we get older.

That ‘rock in the stomach’ feeling is exactly how I’d describe my life for the last five years. I’m going to try the chewing thing tomorrow. How many times are we supposed to chew? Is there a specific number you aim for?

Bill, I usually just aim for ‘mush’ before I swallow. It sounds gross, but it makes a massive difference. I also find that putting my fork down between bites helps me slow down so I don’t revert to my old ways.

Are you still drinking coffee in the morning? I’m wondering if that’s my main trigger.

This is a great reminder that our bodies sometimes just need us to get out of the way. Great work on sticking with it for a month, George. Consistency is the hardest part.
