Hey everyone, I’ve been lurking here for a while and finally felt like I had something worth sharing. I struggled with that nasty combination of yellow, thickening toenails and the constant itching of athlete’s foot for almost three years. It was so embarrassing that I wouldn’t even wear sandals at the beach. I tried the standard over-the-counter sprays and powders, and while they’d help for a week or two, the issue always came back the moment I stopped.
What finally changed things for me was a two-pronged approach. First, I started using a 40% urea cream every single night. If you haven’t tried it, urea at that strength actually dissolves the dead, fungal-infected skin and softens the thick part of the nail so other treatments can actually get in there. I would slather it on, put on some clean cotton socks, and sleep in them.
Second, I swapped my regular shower gel for Hibiclens (the blue surgical soap) just for my feet. I’d let it sit on my toes for about two minutes before rinsing. It really seemed to reset the “environment” down there. Within about a month, the skin was smooth, and the new nail growth coming in actually looked clear for the first time in years.
The biggest thing I learned is that you have to be consistent. I didn’t miss a single night for six weeks. Also, I started throwing my socks in a hot wash with a bit of oxygen bleach to make sure I wasn’t just re-infecting myself. I hope this helps someone else who is feeling frustrated! It takes time, but don’t give up.

Which brand of urea cream did you get? I see a few on Amazon but some look a bit sketchy.

Hibiclens is amazing for skin issues. I used it for folliculitis once and it cleared it right up. Never thought to use it on my feet though.

Be careful with that 40% urea stuff if you have sensitive skin. It can actually cause a bit of a chemical burn if you leave it on too long or if the skin is already cracked. Patch test first!

I did something similar but added a tea tree soak once a week. The urea cream really is the secret weapon for those thick nails though. Nothing else gets through the keratin.

Thanks for the tips! Glad you finally found relief.

How hot are we talking for the wash? My socks always seem to shrink if I go above 40 degrees.

The oxygen bleach is a good call. Regular detergent doesn’t always kill the spores, and that’s why people keep getting it back even after they think it’s gone.

Ordering the cream now. I’ve had this since college and I’m so over it.

I’ve been seeing a podiatrist for a year and we’ve done the laser treatments and the expensive liquids… honestly, the urea cream helped me more than the $500 laser sessions did. It’s crazy how the simple stuff works sometimes.

Did you find that the socks got ruined by the cream? I tried putting lotion on my feet at night once and it just made a huge mess of my sheets.
This is exactly the kind of post I come here for. Real results without the sales pitch. Keep us updated on how it looks in another few months!
