My three-month routine for more consistent digestion

I’m 62 and have spent the last decade fighting sluggish digestion. Three months ago, I simplified everything to see what actually works. Here is my breakdown:

  • Morning: 8oz warm water first thing, then 1 tsp psyllium husk in a large glass of cold water.
  • Evening: A 20-minute brisk walk immediately after dinner.
  • Food: Cut out all snacking after 7 PM.

Timeline results: Week 1 was rough; I actually felt more bloated and discouraged. By Month 1, things started moving more predictably. Now at Month 3, that constant “heavy” feeling in my gut is mostly gone.

What I liked: It’s very cheap and requires no expensive supplements. What I didn’t: The texture of the fiber drink is still unpleasant, and you have to chug it fast.

Surprise: The post-dinner walk did more for my evening gas than the actual fiber did.

Caveat: This is not for people wanting an overnight fix. If you don’t drink at least 60oz of water daily, the psyllium will actually make your constipation worse. It takes real patience.

The post-dinner walk is such an underrated tip. I started doing that last year and it changed my sleep too because I wasn’t laying down with a full stomach.

Do you take the psyllium before or after your actual breakfast? I’ve heard conflicting things about timing.

I tried psyllium but the bloating in the first week was so bad I quit. Maybe I should have stuck it out longer like you did.

@Mary_H_1961 I usually wait about 30 minutes before eating anything solid. Gives the water time to settle.

The water warning is no joke. I ended up in a lot of pain once because I wasn’t hydrating enough while using fiber supplements. Lesson learned.

I’ve found that mixing the powder into a small amount of juice makes the texture easier to handle, though the sugar might negate some benefits.

Thanks for sharing a realistic timeline. Too many people expect magic in 24 hours.

This is almost exactly my routine, but I added a probiotic yogurt in the afternoon. I agree about the late-night snacking—it’s the hardest part to quit but makes the biggest difference for morning regularity. My doctor said our motility slows down so much as we age, especially at night.

Does the warm water in the morning have to be plain, or can I have lemon in it?

Keep it up! It sounds like you found a sustainable rhythm that works for your body.

Checking back in on this. Are you still feeling the benefits of the walk? I’m thinking of starting tonight.
