[personal] Mini rant: I'm fed up with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid being in everything

I’m so sick of niacinamide and hyaluronic acid being shoved into every single product. Even the most basic stuff that doesn’t need that crap has it now, and it’s driving me crazy!!! I honestly blame TikTok for brainwashing people into believing these are some kind of universal miracle ingredients. I can’t even buy the skincare I used to swear by because brands—looking at you, Cetaphil—decided to chase the trend and add niacinamide for no damn reason. I’m so angry because I’m stuck trying to find products for my super sensitive skin all over again. I’m breaking out from everything because they hide niacinamide or stupid hyaluronic acid versions like sodium hyaluronate deep in the ingredients. Drugstore brands are a joke now because they just want to follow the crowd. I spent an entire hour reading labels at the store just to find something decent. I’m just so livid right now. My face is full of painful acne and bumps because of this, and it’s really getting to me. I just needed to vent. PS: Sorry for the cursing.

Your anger is totally justified. Jumping on every bandwagon is the opposite of real skincare innovation, and brands are totally ignoring the customers who actually need to avoid those ingredients when they put them in every single freaking product. I literally saw a blush with hyaluronic acid in it last week… like, why???

Niacinamide is the bane of my existence! Trying to find makeup and skincare has become such a chore. The worst part is that I actually used to like niacinamide for my oily skin, but after a while, it just started causing breakouts. Ugh.

This really gets under my skin. I don’t need my moisturizer to do anything except moisturize. It’s a base! It shouldn’t have active ingredients!!! I did find that Vanicream’s moisturizing cream is great for this. It’s literally just a moisturizer. I think your best bet is to look for stuff specifically made for people with eczema or similar skin conditions.

My skin absolutely hates niacinamide, and I agree it’s so annoying that it’s in literally everything lately. I can’t even experiment with new products anymore, which is no fun! Standing in solidarity with the anti-niacinamide crowd!!

There’s probably niacinamide hidden in this comment, too.

I totally get it. I’m old enough to remember when hyaluronic acid and niacinamide first got big, and that was way before TikTok lol. I think they became super popular in Asian skincare first, and that’s been a massive trend for over a decade now, which is probably why brands like Cetaphil are finally jumping on the bandwagon. There used to be complaints about Cetaphil not being moisturizing enough for dry or dehydrated skin a long time ago, too. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this; it sucks that there aren’t more options.

They even make lube with hyaluronic acid now, which was a total shock when I had to stock it at the store where I work. Like, I love HA, but it’s not for everyone, and it definitely shouldn’t be in everything :anxious_face_with_sweat::anxious_face_with_sweat::anxious_face_with_sweat:

Aww, man, I’m so sorry! I totally feel your frustration. This is me with coconut oil in nearly every hair product or cocos nucifera in every single conditioner I find. I’m allergic and already deal with atopic dermatitis, so it’s incredibly annoying. I get it. I hope you find something that works for you!

For everyone agreeing, can we start sharing which products have been working for you that don’t contain niacinamide (if there are any), since it seems like a lot of us are in the same boat?
