I hit 58 last year and suddenly my stomach decided it didn’t like anything I did anymore. I felt heavy, irregular, and honestly just frustrated because I felt like I was doing everything ‘right’ but still felt off. I tried those massive diet overhauls, but they were too stressful and never stuck. Instead, I decided to try one tiny change every seven days to see if I could find some peace.
Here is how my month looked:
- Week 1: I drank a large glass of room-temperature water before my morning coffee.
- Week 2: I committed to a 10-minute slow walk around the block after my largest meal.
- Week 3: I stopped eating anything after 7:30 PM to give my system a rest before bed.
- Week 4: I focused on chewing every bite at least 20 times to help with the initial breakdown.
By the end of the month, I wasn’t ‘cured,’ but that constant daily discomfort had dropped significantly. My energy came back because I wasn’t spending all day fighting my own midsection. If you feel like you’ve tried everything and nothing works, maybe stop trying the ‘big’ things and focus on the small ones.
A few concrete steps you can try:
- Pick one habit, like the water or the walking, and do ONLY that for a week.
- Try eating without your phone or the TV on so you actually notice when you’re full.
- Give yourself a firm cutoff time for food in the evening.
Ask yourself: When do I feel the most discomfort during the day? Is there one small habit I can shift without it feeling like a massive chore?

The walking after dinner has been a lifesaver for me too. I used to just sit on the couch and feel like a brick was in my stomach. Even just 5 minutes makes a difference.

Does the temperature of the water really matter? I usually have ice water, but I’ve heard others mention room temp is better for digestion.

I’m skeptical about the chewing thing, but I know I’m a fast eater. I’ll give it a shot this week. I’m 64 and the bloating is just getting old.

Chewing is actually huge. My doctor told me digestion starts in the mouth, not the stomach. We forget that when we’re in a rush!

This is such a supportive post. I think at our age we expect things to just work like they used to, but we have to be more intentional. I find that the 7:30 cutoff is the hardest one for me because I love my evening tea and biscuits, but when I skip them, I sleep so much better and wake up without that ‘heavy’ feeling.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s nice to see a plan that isn’t asking me to buy expensive supplements.
When you stopped eating at 7:30, did you find yourself getting hungry before bed? That’s my biggest struggle with the evening cutoff.

I started the morning water habit last month and it really does help ‘wake things up’ before the coffee hits. Good luck with week 5!

I really needed to read this today. I’ve been feeling so stuck and overwhelmed by all the conflicting advice out there. Starting small feels actually doable. I’m going to try the walking first.
