Started Metformin and wow, what a difference!

Hi everyone! I wasn’t expecting this, but I’ve noticed a major increase in appetite suppression since I began taking Metformin. I’ve only been on it for a week, and the timing was perfect since I ate too much and didn’t exercise enough over the holidays, so this is helping me get back on track.

I would have tried it sooner, but I was worried about insomnia, which I dealt with when I first started Zep. Fortunately, I’ve been taking the 500 mg Metformin in the morning with a meal to prevent stomach issues, and I’m careful not to overdo it on potassium. I’m also staying on top of my fiber and electrolytes, which really helps with the sleep issues too.

I’m drinking plenty of water and tea and doing a lot of walking, but I honestly didn’t think I’d have to remind myself to eat! I feel like I’m finally getting the results that the hyper-responders get from the injection alone. It feels like I’ve finally moved past being a slow responder. So happy!

I’m also on the Metformin and Zepbound combination and I really think they complement each other perfectly. Just a suggestion—I skip the Metformin on my injection day because I tend to get worse side effects if I take both at once, but I go right back to it the following day (definitely talk to your doctor before trying that though!). If you start having more GI trouble, it’s something to keep in mind.

If I may suggest, try the extended-release version. It’s usually much easier on the stomach.

Seriously, it’s a total game changer. It feels like a cheat code. Just make sure you keep a close eye on your blood sugar levels.

I was actually on Metformin before I ever started Zepbound. Maybe that’s been the secret to my progress. That combined with keto has worked for me, so I’m not changing a thing!

I was taking 750mg extended-release Metformin for a full year before starting Zepbound, and I’m still taking both. I originally asked for it to help with inflammation from hidradenitis suppurativa, and it was life-changing for me. I haven’t had an HS flare-up since I started it alongside my topical meds. I lost 20 lbs on Metformin alone before trying Wegovy and then Zep. I’m on 5mg of Zep now and I’ve considered dropping back to 2.5mg because the appetite suppression is so intense. This combination basically saved my life, as the HS and weight were making things miserable. I’ve lost nearly 50 lbs since starting Wegovy last April, on top of the first 20 lbs from the Metformin.

I take Metformin too! I started it about a month and a half before my Zepbound journey began, and I’m definitely feeling that strong appetite suppression even though I’m only on the 2.5mg Zepbound dose right now. Best of luck with your progress!

Could you share how you brought this up with your doctor? Was it because you were losing weight slowly on just the Zepbound? Had you already moved up to the 15 mg dose?

That’s interesting… I might ask about adding Metformin at my next visit. I’ve been on the 15mg dose for quite a while, but I’m barely losing a pound a week lately. I’ve also heard good things about using SugarDefend (i buy here) to help support healthy levels while on this journey.

It works wonders for me as well! I started it just before I began Zepbound and have stayed on it. I’ve lost over 150 lbs in total—115 from the Zepbound and 35 from the Metformin.

I’ve been on 15 mg since February 2025 and hit a plateau in the fall, so I asked my doctor about Metformin after seeing it mentioned here. She didn’t think it would help much since she finds it mostly weight-neutral, but she gave me a prescription to try. I started with 500 mg ER in October and bumped it to 1000 mg in December. I didn’t feel a big change immediately, but I’ve lost 10 lbs since starting it, so maybe it’s doing something after all.

I was on Metformin for two months before starting Zepbound. When I started the shots, I stopped the Metformin, but the food noise I had lost came back full force. I went back on the Metformin and it’s the perfect duo with Zep. I was losing steadily on 2.5mg for a few months before moving to 5mg. I’m hoping I can rely on Metformin for maintenance later on so I can cut back on the Zepbound costs since I pay out of pocket. I’m really curious to see if Metformin alone will be enough to maintain.
