Tackling that stubborn perimenopausal jawline acne

I hit 43 and suddenly my jawline looked like I was 16 again, but with the added bonus of dryness and fine lines. I spent a year trying harsh spot treatments that just burned my skin. Six months ago, I finally stripped everything back and focused on the hormonal trigger.

My AM routine is now just a lukewarm water rinse, a gentle Vitamin C serum, and a very hydrating SPF 50. In the PM, I double cleanse to get the sunscreen off, apply a 15% azelaic acid gel, and top it with a basic ceramide cream. I stopped using physical scrubs entirely and cut back on dairy, which seemed to help the inflammation.

I tracked my progress by taking a photo every Sunday morning in the same bathroom light. For the first four weeks, nothing happened. By week eight, the redness was down. By month four, the deep cysts stopped appearing altogether.

If you’re struggling with this, my advice is to stop “attacking” your face. A minimal routine of a non-foaming cleanser, azelaic acid for the redness/bumps, and a solid barrier cream is all you really need. Consistency beats intensity every time.

The ‘attacking the face’ comment hits home. I think we all panic when we see breakouts at this age and reach for the strongest stuff we can find, which just makes the moisture barrier worse.

Which brand of azelaic acid are you using? My derm mentioned it but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

I had the same experience with dairy. It’s annoying because I love cheese, but my skin is so much flatter and less angry since I cut back on the morning lattes.

I’m 48 and just started seeing these deep bumps. It’s so frustrating to deal with wrinkles and acne at the same time. I’ll give the minimal routine a shot because my current 10-step process is clearly failing.

Azelaic acid was a total flop for me, unfortunately. It made my skin itch like crazy. I had to switch to a very low-strength retinol instead, but I agree that the double cleansing is essential for the jawline area.

The Sunday morning photo idea is smart. I always feel like nothing is changing until I look back at how I looked three months ago. Our brains play tricks on us.

Thanks for sharing this. Simple is usually better for us over 40.

Did you notice if the Vitamin C helped with the scarring from the old breakouts? That’s what I’m struggling with now—the spots take months to fade.

Consistency really is key. I tried a similar routine but gave up after two weeks. This post is a good reminder to actually stick with it for a full skin cycle or two.
