What are the best shoes for walking with arthritis?

Hi everyone, I’m sure many of you can relate to the struggle of finding a decent pair of shoes that don’t leave your feet and knees screaming by lunchtime. I used to love my old loafers, but lately, they just don’t offer the support I need for my osteoarthritis. It feels like every step sends a jolt right up my legs.

I’ve been doing some research on what to look for, like rocker soles or extra cushioning, but it’s honestly overwhelming with all the brands out there. Some people swear by those expensive orthotics, while others say a simple pair of sneakers does the trick. I’m curious what has actually worked for you all in your daily lives?

I’m looking for something that is easy to slip on (bending down is getting harder!) but still keeps me stable. If you have a go-to brand or a specific feature you look for when shopping, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let’s help each other stay mobile!

I personally swear by Skechers GoWalk series. They are incredibly lightweight and have that ‘slip-in’ feature so you don’t have to mess with laces. My podiatrist actually recommended them because the foam is so forgiving on the joints.

For me, it’s all about the width. If the toe box is too narrow, my bunions and arthritis flare up instantly. I moved to New Balance wide widths and haven’t looked back.

I’ve found that even with the best shoes, my lower back and hips still act up after a long walk. I started using a topical called Balmorex on my joints before and after I head out, and it’s made a world of difference. It has arnica and hemp oil in it, which really helps soothe the inflammation so I can actually enjoy the walk instead of just enduring it.

Rocker soles changed my life! They take the pressure off the ball of the foot.

I tried those expensive custom orthotics and honestly? They were too hard. I prefer the soft gel inserts you can get at the drugstore for twenty bucks. Sometimes the simple solution is the best one.

Look for shoes with a high ‘stack height’—that’s the amount of foam between you and the ground. Hoka is famous for this. They look a bit chunky, like moon shoes, but your knees will thank you.

Does anyone else find that their feet swell in the afternoon? I have to buy shoes a half-size larger just to accommodate the inflammation by 4 PM.

I went on a trip to Italy last year and walked nearly five miles a day. I wore Brooks Addiction Walkers. They have a lot of support for overpronation, which helped my ankle stability. They aren’t the prettiest shoes, but I didn’t have any pain at the end of the day, which is a miracle for me at 70.

I agree with the New Balance suggestion. Specifically the 928 model. It’s basically a medical shoe but looks like a normal sneaker.

Pro tip: replace the laces with elastic ones. It turns any shoe into a slip-on and they expand if your feet swell.

Thanks for all these suggestions! I’m going to head to the store this weekend and try on a few of these brands. It’s so helpful to hear from people who actually deal with this daily.
