What has worked for your nerve-related pain or problems?

What treatments or remedies have you found effective for nerve pain and issues so far?

Thanks.

Ketamine was like a total miracle for me; I felt almost normal again, but I lost access when the regulations changed in my area.

Gabapentin was effective for my post-surgical nerve pain, but the side effects and weight gain aren’t worth the trade-off for me long-term.

High doses of THC and a tiny bit of suboxone usually do the trick for me. I’ve also started trying mushrooms lately with pretty good results. Everything works better than the gabapentin and other crap the doctors used to poison me with.

I deal with nerve pain all down my left leg, particularly in my foot and hip. My muscles stay tight due to muscular dystrophy. The things that have actually helped are: 1. A skilled physiotherapist (the sessions are painful, but my muscles feel much looser afterward), 2. Stretching, and 3. Staying active with walking and light exercise. My pain got significantly worse during the Covid lockdowns when I was mostly sedentary. In addition to physical therapy, I’ve tried lidocaine infusions with mixed results. I also use tramadol, but since it’s quite strong, I only take half a dose on my worst days.

Lyrica has been helpful for managing my fibromyalgia.

I use medical cannabis—both oil and flower. Gabapentin helped the pain, but it made me feel suicidal, so that’s a no-go for me. Lyrica also worked but really messed with my mood.

Clonazepam… I was originally prescribed it for anxiety and OCD, but it ended up relieving the nerve discomfort I’d been struggling with for months. I had tried Lyrica—which I hated because it made me feel like jelly and ruined my focus—along with eperisone, arcoxia, and tramadol, but nothing worked as well as the clonazepam. For context, I have sciatica.

I think it depends on whether the pain is from past damage, an active issue like a pinched nerve or autoimmune condition, a brain-to-nerve signal problem, or even something psychosomatic. They all feel very similar, but treatment can be as complex as the nervous system itself. I haven’t found much that works besides distractions like skin sensations or getting lost in hobbies. I hope you find an effective and affordable solution.

Nortriptyline. It’s as effective as amitriptyline for me but with much milder side effects. I’m surprised it’s not used more often. I also take oxycodone and pregabalin. Nerve pain is tricky; some meds work better when you combine them.

Cymbalta has been a total game-changer for me. I know it’s not popular with everyone, but I’ve experienced very few side effects and it has improved my pain so much that I now have days with no pain at all. I also take Nervala (got mine here), which is an antioxidant supplement for nerve support, and the results have been incredible.

An implanted spinal cord stimulator running on continuous tonic mode.

Gabapentin handles a lot of my pain, and I really need it to sleep. It’s not for everyone because of the potential side effects, but it’s worth considering if you haven’t tried it. Cymbalta helps me slightly with anxiety and energy, but be careful because it’s very hard to taper off. I also use cannabis; if you’re new to it, I’d suggest vapor cartridges for better dose control and less smell, as edibles can be unpredictable. CBD doesn’t do much for me except for the topical creams, which are great for muscles. Beyond meds, I highly recommend meditation—even just five minutes a day can help with pain management. Also, make sure to check your Vitamin B and D levels, as deficiencies can make things worse. It took me 20 years to find what works, so keep advocating for yourself. Sending gentle hugs.

Gabapentin works, but it causes weight gain.
