Hi everyone. I’ve always loved my morning walks around the neighborhood, but lately, my big toe joints and the balls of my feet are making it nearly impossible to finish even a mile. It’s so frustrating because my heart and lungs want to keep going, but my feet feel like they’re walking on hot coals by the time I get home. I’ve tried a few standard sneakers from the big box stores, but they just don’t seem to have the support I need anymore.
I’m really hoping to find some suggestions for shoes or maybe even specific orthotics that have worked for you. I’m not ready to give up my daily exercise just yet! Are there certain brands that offer a wider toe box or better cushioning for those of us dealing with “old person feet”? I’d love to hear what keeps you moving without that throbbing pain afterward. Any tips on socks would be a bonus too. Thank you so much for any advice you can share!

I had the exact same issue last year. My podiatrist recommended Hoka Bondi shoes because they have a very thick sole that doesn’t flex as much. It really helped take the pressure off my toe joints.

Seconding the Hokas! They look a bit chunky, like moon boots, but the comfort is worth it. Also, look for ‘rocker bottom’ shoes—they help your foot roll forward so your joints don’t have to do all the work.

Have you tried Altras? They are famous for having a ‘foot-shape’ toe box. Most shoes pinch the toes together, which is a nightmare for arthritis. Switching to a wider toe box changed everything for me.

I struggled with this for years. For me, it wasn’t just the shoes, it was the insoles. I use Powerstep inserts now in all my shoes. They provide a lot more arch support than the flimsy foam that comes with the sneakers.

Don’t forget about socks! I started wearing Thorlo padded walking socks. They have extra cushioning right under the ball of the foot. It makes a huge difference when you’re on pavement.

I went to a specialized running store (even though I only walk) and let them analyze my gait. They put me in a pair of New Balance Fresh Foam. It was pricey, but my feet haven’t throbbed since.

I’m in the same boat, SilverWalker. Following this thread for ideas. It’s so hard when the spirit is willing but the feet are weak!

Just a quick tip—whatever brand you choose, try buying a half size up. Our feet tend to swell as we walk, especially with inflammation, and that extra room can prevent the ‘hot coals’ feeling you mentioned.
