Which medical specialists do you consult for neuropathy?

The neuropathy in my feet and ankles is becoming more severe. My Nurse Practitioner doesn’t treat it as an urgent issue, but it’s now affecting my ability to walk. I’m curious which specialists you all visit? Also, is there any hope for things to get better? Thanks!

Once my rheumatologist finished their diagnostic process, I was sent to a neurologist. Following some tests, I was diagnosed with CMT type 4F. While there isn’t a specific treatment, I use nerve pain medication when the discomfort becomes severe.

My neuropathy began as CIPN, but after blood work, my neurologist recommended a pre-diabetic diet. I’m already noticing improvements—I’ve been off gabapentin and duloxetine for three days. My legs are stronger, my head is clearer, and I’m even losing weight. It could be a temporary phase, but having hope is wonderful.

I consulted a neuromuscular specialist after receiving a referral from my rheumatologist.

I see a neuromuscular specialist, which is a specific type of neurologist. My regular neurologist provided the referral.

You’ll want to see a neurologist.

The only thing that’s made a difference for me is taking daily B12 and Vitamin D for the past three years. This has improved the numbness in my feet and made walking much more manageable.

Have you tried describing the sensation as your feet being completely ‘asleep’ without ever waking up? Doctors often lack solutions because nerves don’t typically regenerate. It’s a brutal condition because it isn’t fatal, but it can definitely take a toll on your sanity.

Greetings from Switzerland. I visit a pain management clinic once a year to stay informed about new treatments. My specialists are senior physicians in palliative and pain care. Does that sound better? You can definitely learn to adapt and lead a fulfilling life. Don’t ignore the psychological side of things, and try not to dismiss psychosomatic treatments right away. Looking at your health holistically is very important for managing this. That’s been my path; 18 years ago, I couldn’t have imagined being married with kids, but today I have a partner and two healthy children.
