Which weight loss misconceptions did you eventually have to discard?

I figured this would make for a compelling conversation. Frequently, those of us who have been active here for a while and offer guidance encounter the same kinds of inquiries. Even if we think we’re experts now, there were likely falsehoods we once accepted as truth. Most of mine came from awful magazines for women and my parents’ outdated notions. Here are a few of mine:

Consuming fat immediately becomes body fat

Muscles burn fat from the specific spot they are located (spot reduction)

Eating past 8 PM results in instant fat storage

Breakfast is essential for boosting your metabolism

Frequent small meals maintain a high metabolic rate

The sleeping beauty diet was a viable strategy

I have to like salads to be successful at dieting

I’m curious to know which myths you were raised with!

Misconceptions:

  • My thin peers have the same diet as I do

  • Disregard your hunger, it’s merely a recommendation

  • Veggies are supposed to be gross, just consume them like a prescription

  • Working out requires spending an hour daily at the gym being miserable

That I needed to stay under 1200 calories and try for even lower. The adults around me lacked the expertise to guide me properly.

Carbohydrates are the foe. Bread and pasta are strictly off-limits!

The biggest thing I had to unlearn was that exercise alone makes you thin.

While it’s beneficial, it doesn’t matter if your nutrition isn’t in check.
