I used to be able to enjoy a small bowl of ice cream or some crackers and cheese at 9 PM while watching the news without a second thought. Now that I’ve hit my late 60s, it feels like my stomach just shuts down after sunset. If I eat anything after 7 PM, I’m up half the night with that heavy, “brick in the stomach” feeling and acid reflux that won’t quit.
Last night, I caved and had a few ginger snaps with tea around 8:30 PM. Big mistake. I spent three hours propped up on pillows, wondering where my iron-clad digestion went. It’s frustrating because that little evening snack was my way of winding down.
Has anyone else had to completely cut off eating at a certain hour? How do you handle the cravings when you’re just relaxing in the evening? I’d love to hear your “cutoff” times or any tricks you use to settle things down.

I’m right there with you. 7 PM is my hard limit now. If I cross it, I pay for it until sunrise.

Ginger tea helps me if I slip up, but yeah, the ice cream days are over. It’s just not worth the heartburn.

I had to buy a wedge pillow for the reflux. It was a game changer for those nights when I give in to the late-night snack. It keeps the acid down where it belongs.

Is it the sugar or just the timing? I find I can have a small piece of turkey or ham but anything sweet just sits there.

I switched my ‘treat’ to 3 PM. It feels weird at first to eat dessert in the middle of the afternoon, but my sleep is 100% better now.

I still eat late. Maybe I’m just lucky, or maybe it’s the smaller portions. I try to keep it under 100 calories.

Try a short walk after your last meal. Even just ten minutes in the garden helps move things along before you sit down for the night.

I’ve noticed that if I drink too much water with the snack, it makes the reflux even worse. Everything just floats back up when I lie down.

The ‘brick’ feeling is the worst. I’ve found that a bit of apple cider vinegar in water before dinner helps my stomach stay more active through the evening. Might be worth a try.

I just stop eating at 6. Period. It’s hard when the grandkids are over, but otherwise, I stick to it.
It’s definitely an age thing. My doctor said our digestive enzymes slow down as we get older. I started taking a supplement and it helped a little, but the 7 PM rule is still the best medicine.

I’ve replaced my snack with herbal tea. Peppermint or Chamomile. It gives me that ‘ritual’ feeling without the calories or the heartburn.

I miss my late night cereal bowls. Now I just have a glass of warm milk if I’m desperate. Seems easier on the gut than solid food.

Have you checked for a hiatal hernia? That was my problem. Once I treated that, I could handle a light snack again, though still nothing heavy.

I use an app to track what I eat. Turns out dairy was my main trigger at night, not the cookies themselves. Maybe try a dairy-free snack?

Glad I’m not alone in this. It feels like such a boring way to live sometimes, but waking up feeling refreshed instead of bloated is worth the sacrifice.
