I’ve spent most of my fifties trying to do the “right” thing. Every doctor and health magazine says the same thing: eat more raw vegetables, load up on big salads, and keep the crunch. For about six months, I was the poster child for healthy eating. Huge kale salads for lunch, raw broccoli snacks, and bowls of spinach. But instead of feeling energized and “clean,” I felt absolutely miserable.
The physical discomfort was one thing, but the social side was worse. I started turning down dinner invites because my stomach would swell up so much by 7 PM that I couldn’t comfortably button my trousers. It’s incredibly embarrassing to be at a nice restaurant and feel like a ticking time bomb of gas and noise. I even started sleeping in the guest room some nights because the cramping and bloating kept me tossing and turning, and I didn’t want to keep my husband awake with my constant shifting.
I kept thinking I just needed to “push through” or that my body was “detoxing.” But after half a year, I realized the advice just wasn’t working for me. My system clearly couldn’t handle the massive amount of roughage. I felt like a failure because everyone talks about raw greens like they’re a miracle cure.
A few weeks ago, I finally gave up on the raw stuff and started steaming everything—carrots, spinach, even my cucumbers (sounds weird, I know). The difference was almost overnight. I’m still eating my vegetables, but I’m not punishing my gut to do it. Has anyone else found that the “gold standard” of healthy eating actually made them feel worse?

I had the exact same realization last year. I thought I was doing my body a favor with those huge raw kale bowls, but I was just a balloon for three months straight. Switching to soups was a game changer.

It’s the cellulose. As we get older, our digestive enzymes aren’t always up to the task of breaking down those tough plant walls. Steaming is basically doing half the work for your stomach.
Steamed cucumbers? I’ve never heard of that! But honestly, if it works, it works. I’ve been sticking to roasted root veg lately.
The social anxiety part is so real. I used to dread going to friends’ houses because I knew I’d be in pain by dessert. Now I just bring my own little container of cooked squash.

I think the ‘raw food’ movement really did a number on our generation. We aren’t ruminants; we don’t have four stomachs to process all that grass!
I tried the raw smoothie trend back in 2019. I ended up with such bad reflux I had to see a specialist. They told me to stop drinking my salads and start sautéing them in a little olive oil. My gut has been much happier since I started listening to my body instead of the influencers.
Does this apply to fruit too? I notice apples give me a lot of trouble unless I bake them first.
Yes, apples can be tough! Stewed apples with a little cinnamon are actually great for the gut lining. Much easier to digest than a raw Granny Smith.

I feel seen. I thought I was just failing at being healthy. It’s a relief to know other people struggle with ‘good’ foods.

I noticed this with peppers. Can’t do them raw at all anymore, but roasted is fine. Getting older is definitely a learning curve for the kitchen.

How long did it take for the bloating to go down after you switched to steaming? I’m on day three of no salads and still feel a bit tight.

Give it about a week. Your system needs time to settle down. Drinking some warm ginger tea helps speed things along for me.

This is such a good reminder that there is no ‘one size fits all’ for nutrition. If it makes you feel like garbage, it’s not healthy for YOU.
